A gift shop in Krakow, Poland, January 2023

In January 2023, I spent a significant amount of time traveling around Europe, including Poland, reconnecting with my roots and family. After arriving in Warsaw, I flew to Krakow and then made my way to Nowy SÄ…cz to spend quality time with my Mum and family.

Home Again – Time with Family in Nowy SÄ…cz

It was truly special to be back in
Nowy SÄ…cz, my hometown, and enjoy the familiar surroundings. The Christmas lights were still up in Nowy and Stary SÄ…cz, adding a festive charm to the wintery atmosphere. My Mum, sister-in-law Kasia, brother, and I had a wonderful dinner at the Irena Eris Spa Hotel in Krynica, enjoying the cozy ambiance and great food. We also visited Stary SÄ…cz, a place filled with history, beauty, and peacefulness.

Exploring Krakow – A Day Trip with Mum and Pani Kurzejowa

With
Mum and Pani Kurzejowa, we made a memorable day trip to Krakow, where we were treated to amazing weather. Krakow, a city full of history, culture, and charm, never disappoints. One of the most memorable parts of our day was visiting St. Mary’s Church in Rynek, the Main Market Square of Krakow.

St. Mary’s Church in Rynek

St. Mary’s Church is one of Krakow’s most iconic landmarks and an architectural masterpiece. The church’s twin towers, which are visible from almost any part of the Old Town, are striking and add a dramatic flair to the city’s skyline. Inside, the altar designed by Veit Stoss, with its intricate woodwork and golden details, is a testament to the incredible artistic craftsmanship of the Gothic period. The church is also famous for its daily trumpet call from the higher tower, which echoes across the square and is a beautiful tradition dating back centuries.

The
interior of the church is breathtaking, with vivid stained-glass windows, stone sculptures, and a remarkable wooden ceiling that transports visitors back to medieval times. We spent a quiet moment in the church, soaking in its peaceful atmosphere and reflecting on the rich history it holds.

Kazimierz and More

After visiting
St. Mary’s Church, we explored Kazimierz, the historical Jewish district of Krakow, known for its cobblestone streets, synagogues, and quirky cafes. This area offers a rich cultural mix, and it’s always a pleasure to wander its narrow streets, experiencing its unique charm.

Exploring the Tatra Mountains – Snow, Nature, and Traditions

After Krakow, I took a
trip to Czorsztyn, a picturesque town still covered in snow. It was a charming winter landscape, with snowy hills, frozen lakes, and a peaceful, serene atmosphere. We also visited Sromowce Niżne, where we walked across the Poland-Slovakia bridge, a symbolic crossing between the two countries, offering beautiful views of the Pieniny Mountains. On the bridge, we paused to take in the natural beauty and history of this borderland.

From there, we crossed into
Czerwony Klasztor (the Red Monastery) in Slovakia for a peaceful walk in the winter landscape. The monastery, nestled in the valley, is an important historical site, and it was lovely to enjoy its tranquil setting.

Niedzica, Białka Tatrzańska, and Bukowina Tatrzańska

I continued my journey through the
Tatra region, visiting Niedzica with its famous castle overlooking Lake Czorsztyn. The castle’s location is magnificent, and in winter, it seemed even more magical, with snow adding to the atmosphere. We also visited BiaÅ‚ka TatrzaÅ„ska and Bukowina TatrzaÅ„ska, two villages known for their beautiful winter scenery and popular ski resorts. Even with the snow and cold, the charm of the mountains was undeniable.

A Concert in Szczawnica – Winter Beauty at Night

We finished our time in the
Tatra region with a visit to Szczawnica, a small town known for its mineral springs and health resorts. The town, especially at night in winter, felt like a winter wonderland. We attended a concert in the town, where the snow added an extra layer of magic to the atmosphere. Despite the cold, the charm of Szczawnica in the winter was captivating, and we felt completely enchanted by the setting.

Returning to Krakow and Home

After our beautiful journey through the
Tatra Mountains and other stunning places, I returned to Krakow for my flight back to Warsaw, and eventually, to Panama. This trip was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with my family and enjoy the beauty of Poland in winter, surrounded by the people I love.
