April 2019: Feeling at Home in Portugal and Beyond

In April 2019, I returned to
Portugal, which has truly started feeling like home. The comfort and sense of belonging I experience in Óbidos often reminds me of my hometown Nowy SÄ…cz. While the two places are culturally and geographically worlds apart, they both evoke that special warmth and connection that comes from being in a place where you feel grounded and at peace.

During this visit, I spent more time in
Óbidos, savouring its charm and continuing to make it my own. However, I also ventured beyond the town, exploring more of the Caldas da Rainha region, visiting Salir do Porto, Ferrel, and Leiria. Each place offered unique experiences, but it was Leiria that stood out as a wonderful surprise.

Leiria: A Hidden Gem

Leiria is a city that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, but it is a place full of charm, history, and life. Located in central Portugal, Leiria boasts a rich history that dates back to Roman times and was significantly influenced during the medieval period.

At the heart of Leiria stands the
Leiria Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the city. The castle is a majestic reminder of Portugal’s medieval past and offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Walking through its walls, I could feel the history seeping through every stone, imagining the tales of knights and royalty that once played out here.

The city itself has a delightful mix of
old and new, with vibrant streets filled with cafés, shops, and local markets. I particularly enjoyed the Praça Rodrigues Lobo, the main square, which is an inviting spot to relax and watch the world go by. The blend of traditional Portuguese architecture and modern urban life gave Leiria a distinct charm, making it one of the highlights of this trip.

Caldas da Rainha, Salir do Porto, and Ferrel

Closer to Óbidos, I explored
Caldas da Rainha further, a city I had already grown fond of. Its hot springs and the fascinating marketplace never fail to impress. The town has a vibrant local culture, and its creative energy, thanks to its art school and studios, is infectious.

Salir do Porto, with its beautiful bay and dunes, offered a relaxing escape. Walking along its sandy paths and taking in the views of the Atlantic Ocean was incredibly calming. It’s a small place, but its natural beauty leaves a big impression.

Ferrel, known for its proximity to the surfing paradise of Peniche, provided a glimpse into the laid-back coastal lifestyle that I love so much about Portugal. Its simplicity and connection to nature make it a great spot to unwind and recharge.

A Day in Frankfurt

On my way back to Bangkok, I had a
stopover in Frankfurt, a city I hadn’t visited in a long time. This return was a pleasant rediscovery of Germany’s financial hub, which also has a softer, more cultural side.

Frankfurt’s
Römerberg, the historic centre, captivated me with its reconstructed medieval buildings and the beautiful St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, an impressive Gothic structure that stands out in the city’s skyline. Walking along the Main River, I enjoyed the contrast of the old and new—historic bridges and modern skyscrapers creating a dynamic cityscape.

The city’s mix of international flair and German tradition makes it a fascinating place to explore, even for a brief visit. Spending time there reminded me why I have always admired the energy and efficiency of German cities, and it was a perfect way to end my journey before heading back to Southeast Asia.

Reflecting on Home and Connection

This trip was a reminder of how much
Portugal, and especially Óbidos, has become a home for me—a place where I feel a sense of belonging and pride. At the same time, the exploration of places like Leiria and Frankfurt reinforced my love for travel and discovery. Whether it’s the familiarity of a beloved town or the thrill of exploring a new one, every journey adds layers to the experience of life.
