At the end of March 2026, a small window opened.

After months of constraints and careful navigation, it finally became possible to travel again within Venezuela with a bit more flexibility from the authorities. It was a trip long anticipated — not for its destination alone, but for what it would allow: a return to the field, to places where work takes shape beyond documents and discussions.

The journey began in Caracas, early in the morning, heading south toward San Fernando de Apure. Hundreds of kilometres unfolded slowly, the city giving way to long stretches of open land. The plains extended wide and quiet, shaped by heat, distance, and time.

The landscape changed gradually.

Dry grasslands, scattered trees standing resilient under a strong sun, rivers appearing as calm interruptions in the vastness. In some areas, the effects of drought were visible — the earth tired, colours subdued. And yet, life continued. Always quietly, always persistently.

There were pauses along the way.

Stops for coffee in roadside places where time seems to move differently. Lunch taken in small towns, where conversations with colleagues stretched naturally beyond work — about the journey, about the country, about the people we would soon meet. These moments, simple as they are, become part of the understanding.

San Fernando was not the destination, but a point of departure.

From there, the road led deeper into the municipality of Pedro Camejo, toward places that are rarely visible on maps beyond the local level. La Macanilla, Puerto Páez, Belén de Cinaruco — names that carry weight for those who live there, and stories that unfold slowly for those who visit.

In La Macanilla, a school stood as a reminder that change can begin quietly. Spaces designed for protection and learning had been created within the school environment — places where children can express themselves, where music, tradition, and education come together. The presence of instruments, traditional clothing, and learning materials spoke not only of support, but of an effort to restore normality.

Further along, in Puerto Páez, conversations with local health authorities brought another layer of understanding. Services stretched across large distances. Needs that evolve faster than resources. Practical discussions, grounded in reality, shaped by daily constraints rather than theory.

Then to Belén de Cinaruco, where a school that once did not function now carries life again. From zero students to dozens within a year. Classrooms reopened. Teachers trained. Infrastructure restored — water through a newly drilled well, storage systems installed, sanitation improved, solar panels harnessing the same sun that defines the region. Even school gardens now grow, adding something essential yet often overlooked: diversity, nourishment, continuity.

Between these places, the road remained constant.

Long drives. Dust rising behind the vehicle. Occasional settlements. Children watching quietly as we passed. Houses that speak of resilience more than comfort. Indigenous communities living with the realities of distance, environmental pressure, and limited access to services — yet maintaining identity, structure, and presence.

Life here is not easy.

But it is not static either.

Across the communities visited, there are signs — sometimes small, sometimes more visible — that solutions are taking shape. Not perfect, not immediate, but real. Built through effort, through cooperation, through persistence.

Evenings in San Fernando brought reflection.

Notes reviewed. Observations shared. Conversations with colleagues continued — trying to make sense of what had been seen, what had been confirmed, what still requires attention. There is a particular clarity that comes from these exchanges after long days in the field.

And then, the road back to Caracas.

The same hundreds of kilometres, but no longer the same journey. What had been abstract now had faces, places, voices. The landscape, once observed, now felt known — even if only partially.

In January and February 2026, a small window opened.
 
Work in Caracas briefly loosened its grip, and I was able to step away for twelve precious days — just long enough to breathe differently, to walk without urgency, to let distance do its quiet work. I flew out of Venezuela and landed in Panama City, initially for a single night. Then onward to Lima and Montevideo. And finally, back again to Panama for two more days before returning to Caracas.
 
A simple route on paper.
A deeply meaningful one in practice.
 
Panama has never been just a stopover for me.
 
Casco Viejo, remembered
 
Much of this short stay unfolded in Casco Viejo, the historic heart of the city and a place that carries layers of memory for me. Narrow streets, worn balconies, pastel façades shaped by centuries of fire, collapse, rebuilding, and resilience. Founded in 1673 after the destruction of the original Panama City by pirates, Casco Viejo has always been a place of reinvention — Spanish colonial bones, French balconies, Caribbean rhythms, and modern life stitched together.
 
Walking there again felt quietly emotional.
 
I passed buildings where I once lived, streets I knew by heart during a previous posting. Cafés where mornings used to begin slowly. Corners that still seemed to remember me, even if only I felt it. Casco has a way of holding time gently — not erasing it, not clinging to it, simply allowing it to coexist.
 
The city beyond postcards
 
Panama City revealed itself again through movement.
 
I walked along Avenida Balboa, where the skyline meets the sea and the Pacific stretches wide and calm, ships waiting patiently in the distance. I wandered through Vía Argentina, lively and familiar, shaded by trees and filled with conversations, cafés, and the easy rhythm of neighbourhood life.
 
And I returned to Ciudad del Saber — the City of Knowledge — where I once worked, thought, planned, worried, hoped. Built on the grounds of the former Canal Zone, it remains a place devoted to ideas, cooperation, and long conversations about the world and how to make it slightly better. Being there again felt like opening an old notebook and recognising your own handwriting.
 
Friends, pauses, and softness
 
This visit was not about ticking places off a list.
 
It was about meeting friends, some old, some newer. About sitting down without rushing. About laughter, shared meals, stories retold and new ones started. About allowing myself to simply be — not on assignment, not in crisis mode, not counting hours.
 
Panama offered that generously.
 
A quiet closing
 
This album captures a gentle interlude between chapters — a moment suspended between Caracas and the journeys that followed, between past versions of myself and the one I am still becoming.
 
It was a return filled with gratitude.
A pause shaped by memory.
A reminder that some places never fully let go of you — and perhaps never should.

After Lima, the road bent south.
 
In January 2026, the journey continued to Montevideo — a city that does not rush to impress, and perhaps for that very reason, leaves a deep mark. Most of my time unfolded there, along the wide estuary of the Río de la Plata, where water stretches so far that it forgets it is a river and begins to behave like the sea.
 
Uruguay welcomed me quietly. And I learned quickly that this is how it prefers to be met.
 
A city opened by walking
 
One of my first days in Montevideo was spent with Elias, a student of history and an attentive guide, the kind who does not perform knowledge but shares it. With him, the city began to speak in layers.
 
We started in Plaza Independecia, where the city negotiates between epochs. On one side, the old city gates once stood; on the other, modern avenues stretch outward. At the centre, Artigas watches patiently — not triumphantly, but thoughtfully — as if aware that independence is always an ongoing project.
 
From there, we drifted into the Ciudad Vieja, where Montevideo feels most itself. Streets narrow, façades soften, balconies lean slightly toward each other. The Catedral Metropolitanastood calm and dignified, carrying centuries without display. Nearby, small streets opened unexpectedly into cafés, bookshops, forgotten corners where the city seems to pause mid-sentence.
 
At Mercado del Puerto, smoke and voices filled the air. Parrillas hissed, conversations overlapped, wine glasses clinked. The market is not curated nostalgia — it is lived ritual, daily, generous, unapologetic. Montevideo does not romanticise its traditions; it simply continues them.
 
We walked toward the port, where cranes and ships reminded me how deeply the city has always been tied to movement and departure. Montevideo has sent people out into the world for generations — and received many back again.
 
Beyond postcards
 
Later, Elias took me north, away from the usual routes.
 
At the Mercado Agricola de Montevideo, life felt resolutely local. Fruit stalls, butcher counters, neighbours greeting each other by name. Around it, we walked streets shaped by earlier waves of migration — former Jewish shops, faded signage, traces of commerce and community layered quietly onto everyday life.
 
This part of the city felt honest and unposed. People living, shopping, arguing gently, getting on with their days. It was one of the most beautiful walks of the trip.
 
Days of wandering
 
The following days unfolded without structure, and that felt intentional.
 
I wandered again through the old city, then across Tres Cruces, near the Italian Hospital — a working district, practical, unadorned. Later still, the city shifted register once more around the World Trade Centre Montevideo, where glass and height speak a different language, one of global rhythm and forward motion.
 
By the coast, everything softened.
 
Near Pocitos, where my hotel was, days ended by the water. I walked along the rambla, watched locals pass with thermos flasks and mate cups, dogs trotting patiently at their sides. At the fish market nearby, silver bodies gleamed briefly before disappearing into paper and bags. Life moved at a human pace.
 
The beach did not dominate the city; it accompanied it.
 
A day in Colonia
 
One day carried me away from the capital entirely, on a bus to Colonia del Sacramento.
 
Colonia is a city of fragments. Portuguese stones, Spanish walls, uneven streets that curve rather than align. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it wears its history lightly, almost playfully. Cobblestones insist you slow down. Doors open onto gardens rather than statements. The river appears suddenly, wide and luminous, blurring the line between Uruguay and Argentina beyond.
 
Walking there felt like moving through a conversation between empires — unfinished, unresolved, quietly beautiful.
 
What remains
 
Uruguay does not insist on attention.
 
It earns it slowly, through light, through space, through the dignity of ordinary life. Montevideo, in particular, felt like a city comfortable with itself — thoughtful, slightly melancholic, generous in its silences.
 
I left feeling rested rather than exhilarated.
Grounded rather than dazzled.
 
Some places leave you with stories.
Uruguay left me with pace — and the sense that slowing down can be its own form of arrival.

Three days in Lima
 
I arrived in Lima without a plan, and that felt right.
 
Some cities ask to be prepared for. Others ask you to listen. Lima, I learned quickly, belongs to the second kind. It does not announce itself loudly. It reveals itself if you are willing to walk, to pause, to look twice.
 
I had three days. I decided early on not to rush them.
 
Day One — Walking until the city speaks
 
The first morning opened quietly in Miraflores. Light filtered through tall trees, cafés were only just beginning to wake up, and the streets felt unhurried, almost reflective. I walked with no destination, letting curiosity decide the route. Wide pavements, well-kept parks, occasional bursts of colour from bougainvillea or street art — the city felt composed, thoughtful.
 
Then the land dropped away.
 
Suddenly the Pacific appeared below the cliffs, vast and indifferent, a constant presence rather than a spectacle. From above, surfers looked like punctuation marks moving across long sentences of water. I leaned on the railing for a long time, watching waves repeat themselves with quiet discipline. Lima, I realised, lives with the ocean not as a postcard, but as a neighbour.
 
Hours passed like that.
 
By the time I drifted into Barranco, the mood had shifted. The streets narrowed, the buildings leaned slightly into each other, and stories seemed to cling to balconies and cracked walls. Barranco felt like a place that remembers. Once a retreat for the wealthy, later claimed by artists and rebels, it carries its contradictions lightly.
 
I crossed the Bridge of Sighs almost by accident. Someone nearby told the legend — hold your breath, make a wish — and I did, smiling at myself for doing so. Cities survive not because of facts alone, but because of these small rituals people agree to keep alive.
 
I ended the day tired in the best possible way, legs heavy, mind quiet, the city no longer unfamiliar.
 
Day Two — Stories layered on stone
 
The second day brought a different rhythm. I met Sebastián, and with him the city opened its deeper layers.
 
We stepped into the historic centre, where Lima shows its bones. The cathedral stood firm and solemn, carrying centuries of ceremony, conflict, and faith. Inside, the air felt dense with time. I thought about how many people had stood exactly where I was standing, each believing their moment was decisive.
 
Behind the presidential palace, Sebastián led me somewhere unexpected — a library, discreet and almost invisible from the outside. Inside, the noise of the city softened instantly. Shelves, desks, light filtering through high windows. It felt like a place that exists precisely so power does not forget to listen.
 
Then Lima changed tone again.
 
Chinatown hit us like a wave — noise, colour, heat, movement. Streets alive with shouting vendors, sizzling pans, signs competing for attention. Sebastián explained how Chinese migration shaped Lima’s food and culture, how fusion became tradition. Nothing about it felt curated. It was alive, functional, unapologetic.
 
Later, as daylight faded, fountains rose and danced in the park. Water leapt and twisted, lights changed colour, children ran between jets. It was theatrical, joyful, slightly absurd — and perfect. Lima, it seemed, is unafraid of delight.
 
The day ended with drinks back in Miraflores. Conversation slowed. We talked about life, work, the odd paths people take. The city felt closer now, no longer observed but shared.
 
Day Three — Preparing to leave
 
The final day was intentionally simple.
 
Shopping in Miraflores. A last coffee. Familiar streets that now felt almost routine. It is always a strange moment when a place stops being new and starts being known — even slightly.
 
I packed slowly.
 
Outside, the city continued as if I were not leaving. That felt comforting rather than dismissive. Cities that matter never cling. They trust you will remember.
 
What stayed
 
Lima did not overwhelm me. It did something better.
 
It let me walk into it, step by step, story by story, without insisting on being understood all at once. It offered calm and chaos, ocean and stone, ritual and spontaneity — and asked only attention in return.
 
I left knowing I had not finished with this city.
Some places make that clear quietly.
 
Lima did — somewhere between the sound of waves below the cliffs and the echo of footsteps in old streets.

Venezuela in 2026 will be a live and evolving collection, growing week by week, season by season, until the day I finally leave the country for my next deployment. It will gather fragments of daily life, small journeys, conversations, landscapes, celebrations, quiet mornings, unexpected encounters, and all the ordinary magic that makes up a year lived with attention.
 
By the time this album began, I had already spent two and a half years in Venezuela. Long enough for the country to stop being only a destination and to become something closer to home. Long enough for streets, cafés, hills, faces and routines to carry memory. And yet, every day here still brings something new.
 
What will fill these pages over the coming months?
 
There will be Caracas in all its contrasts: the hills breathing green above the city, the sudden rainstorms, the colour of markets, the rhythm of evenings, the quiet dignity of ordinary days.
There will be journeys beyond the capital, small and large, planned and improvised.
There will be friendship, because this country has a way of offering it generously.
There will be tables shared, laughter, hallacas and coffee, conversations that stretch long into the night.
There will be light and shadow, because life always carries both, and Venezuela knows how to hold them side by side.
 
Above all, there will be presence.
 
As this album grows, it will become a gentle record of a final chapter of my time here: six more months of discovery, colour, work, connection and belonging, before the road bends once again toward a new horizon.
 
For now, it begins simply, with gratitude for the years already lived in this remarkable country, and with quiet anticipation for everything still waiting to be written.
 
Venezuela continues to teach me how to stay curious.

There is something tender and quietly resilient about spending the festive season in Caracas.

Late December has arrived, and while the backdrop may be complex—economically, socially, emotionally—what continues to shine, perhaps more brightly than anything else, is the spirit of the people. Christmas 2025 in Venezuela has not come without its shadows, but it has brought with it a depth of light that can only be found when joy is chosen, not given.

The days leading up to Christmas were a tapestry of small, meaningful moments. Walks through the city, with its unexpected pockets of colour and beauty, revealed trees wrapped in lights and music spilling out from balconies. Markets bustled with last-minute shoppers. Nativity scenes—pesebres—stood proudly in homes and shop windows alike, each one handcrafted with love and care.

One of the most special traditions I got to be part of this year was preparing hallacas. These parcels of maize dough filled with stewed meats, olives, and raisins, wrapped in banana leaves, are far more than food—they’re family rituals, they’re memory, they’re Christmas itself. Together with friends, we laughed, learned, and folded, our fingers sticky with dough and stories.

Evenings were spent gathering with friends, often around simple meals or under the blinking lights of modest but joyful decorations. In a city that dances between challenge and celebration, these gatherings felt like small victories of connection. They reminded us that festivity is not about excess, but about presence.

Caracas, too, surprises you. Its green hills, wrapping around the city like a protective cradle. Its murals, telling stories of resistance, resilience, and art. Its people—full of warmth, humour, grace.

There were moments of stillness too. Looking at the mountains as dusk fell. Listening to the city hum, not loudly, but steadily. Feeling part of something fleeting and, at the same time, timeless.

This Christmas may not have had snow or pine trees or carols in the traditional sense. But it had light. It had flavour. It had dignity. And it had a kind of magic that can only be found in places that insist on hope.

Cementerio del Este, Caracas, Venezuela, October 2025

Just a week before All Saints’ Day—my favourite celebration back in Poland—I found myself wandering through the quiet paths of Cementerio del Este in Caracas. Perhaps it is that Polish reverence for 1 November, with its glowing cemeteries lit by candlelight, that instilled in me a love for these places of rest. Over the years, I’ve made it a quiet tradition to visit cemeteries whenever I travel—whether in Lisbon, Kraków, Luanda or Bangkok. Each one whispers its own story.

Cementerio del Este surprised me. Spread across the rolling hills of La Trinidad, it feels modern, almost minimalist. The flat stones, neatly mown grass, and geometric layout reminded me more of how I imagined North American cemeteries might look—open, ordered, facing the sky rather than enclosed by shadow. There are no gothic tombs here, no moss-covered angels or iron fences—just light, space, and a stunning view of Caracas, stretching out like a living mosaic in the valley below.

I walked slowly, letting the names, dates, and faces on the gravestones speak. Some offered smiles from old black-and-white portraits; others left only carved names to the sun. I paused often. These visits never feel like meditations on death—rather, they feel like celebrations of life. And this one was no different.

When my friend and I left the cemetery, neither of us felt heavy. Quite the opposite. We followed the day into a nearby restaurant and were gifted with an unexpected moment of joy: a group of dancers performing traditional Venezuelan folk routines, their music full of rhythm and colour. We stayed for a while, clapping, smiling, soaking in the joy of it all.

It was the perfect way to honour life—a quiet morning among the resting, followed by music, dance, and laughter among the living.

Nine days under the Portuguese sun, wrapped in the smell of the sea, the shimmer of blue-and-white tiles, and the joy of shared adventures.
 
This trip wasn’t just about geography — it was about companionship, discovery, and seeing familiar places through the fresh, astonished eyes of others. I travelled with a beautiful group of people — Leo, Giovanni, Kate, Paulo, Maria, and Mahendra — and each one brought something special into the light of those days.
 
For Leo and Giovanni, it was their first time in Portugal. That fact alone gave the trip an extra glow. Every street we walked, every meal we shared, every view that opened before us — it all felt like a gift being unwrapped together.
 
We began in Óbidos, that fairytale town of stone and flowers, with its ancient castle walls embracing whitewashed houses. It always feels like stepping into another century. We wandered its alleys, climbed its ramparts, and paused to sip ginjinha served in tiny chocolate cups — a small but joyful ritual of this place.
 
From there, we explored the coastal villages of central Portugal — Foz do Arelho, São Martinho do Porto, and others nestled around forested hills and stretches of sand. The air was salty and warm, the Atlantic wild and playful. There were long drives past pine groves and golf greens, unexpected viewpoints where you could watch the sky melt into the water, and cafés where time politely slowed down.
 
With Giovanni, I returned to Nazaré, the town where land and sea seem locked in eternal dialogue. Even without the record-breaking waves of winter, Nazaré pulses with elemental power. Fishermen’s boats bobbed in the harbour, their colours faded by salt and sun. We climbed to Sítio, the clifftop district, and looked out over the vastness. It was quiet, but the roar of the ocean still echoed in the imagination.
 
Later, we went inland — deep into Alentejo, to visit Maria and Mahendra. Their warm welcome was matched by the calm of the landscape: undulating hills, vineyards, cork oak trees scattered like dots across golden fields. Here, the world seems to breathe more slowly. We shared long meals, ripe conversations, and moments of silence that felt as nourishing as the food.
 
And then, the jewel waiting at the north — Porto.
My first visit, and what a wonder it was.
 
Arriving in Porto felt like stepping into a living painting — steep hills covered in terracotta roofs, the Douro River gliding gracefully below, and the constant sound of footsteps on stone. The city is built of layers: Romanesque cathedrals, Baroque churches, narrow staircases, street art, the smell of grilled sardines, the echo of fado.
 
We walked the Ribeira, the historic riverfront district, with its labyrinthine charm and centuries-old facades. The colours of the buildings — ochres, pinks, deep reds — danced in the sunlight. From there, we crossed the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, an architectural marvel designed by a disciple of Eiffel, and admired the view back across the river: the heart of Porto clinging to the hills like a theatre set.
 
There was something profoundly romantic and melancholic about Porto — a kind of noble fatigue, as though the city had seen too much beauty to rush anymore. The azulejos, Portugal’s famous blue tiles, told stories on every corner — saints, ships, angels, and kings — and each church seemed more intricate and moving than the last.
 
We tried Port wine at its source, tasted meals that were simple and rich with memory, and sat on high balconies watching the city exhale with the river.
 
Porto was a revelation. To see it for the first time, in the company of people I care about, was to understand why it leaves such a mark on the soul.
 
Across these nine days, we covered coasts and castles, markets and mountains, and the small in-between places where the most unexpected magic waits. We swam in cold Atlantic waves, got lost in sleepy villages, sat in silence under fig trees, and celebrated life with spontaneous toasts over fresh seafood and warm bread.
 
This wasn’t just a holiday. It was a patchwork of joy, sewn together by good people, golden light, and the sheer luck of being alive in such a moment.
 
I return now, heart full and grateful.
Grateful for the laughter, for the wide skies, for the way Portugal always manages to show me something new — even after all these years.

In mid-August 2025, I set off on a journey to Portugal with my Venezuelan friend Giovanni. As fate would have it, our route included a stopover in Madrid—and what could have been just an airport layover turned into a beautiful five-hour adventure through the Spanish capital.
 
After landing at Barajas, we were joined by our dear friend Leo, another Venezuelan who had arrived earlier. The three of us hadn’t been together since our Polish-Slovak escapades earlier in the summer, so it already felt like a reunion worth celebrating.
 
Eager to make the most of our time, we took a taxi straight to the Banco de España metro station, right at the edge of Plaza de Cibeles. From there, we began a leisurely walk westward, soaking in the grandeur of Madrid’s most iconic boulevard—Calle de Alcalá.
 
We passed the Cibeles Fountain, where the goddess Cybele rides her chariot drawn by lions, watched over by the majestic Palacio de Cibeles, once a post office, now the city hall. From there, we continued along the bustling Gran Vía, often called the Spanish Broadway, lined with regal buildings, theatres, rooftop terraces, and classic shopfronts that give Madrid its unmistakable urban charm.
 
Despite the scorching summer heat, Giovanni was enchanted—it was his first time in Spain, and you could see the wonder in his eyes as we moved through the city’s heart.
 
We paused to admire the Metropolis Building, its ornate dome glinting under the sun, then meandered past Puerta del Sol, alive with performers, tourists, and the iconic clock tower of the old post office—the symbolic centre of Spain. From there, we strolled through the cooler side streets until we reached the elegant Plaza Mayor, where we stood beneath the colonnades, briefly escaping the sun and absorbing the square’s historic atmosphere.
 
Finally, we reached the Royal Palace of Madrid, standing proudly over the city, with the Almudena Cathedral just beside it. The views from the palace promenade were lovely—soft golden light, distant hills, and a city that felt both grand and lived-in.
 
Though our time was brief, we had truly walked through Madrid’s historic and architectural heart, weaving together laughter, curiosity, and the delight of shared discovery. After one last cold drink, we took a taxi back to Barajas, refreshed and grateful.
 
That evening, as our flight took off toward Lisbon, we looked back on a perfect afternoon—a mini adventure tucked between two countries, rich with friendship, sunshine, and the timeless beauty of Madrid.

It’s nearly the end of June 2025, and today—on a calm and sunny Saturday off—my Venezuelan friend Giovanni and I decided to break away from the routine. Rather than heading to the familiar corners of Caracas, we picked a route that promised something a little less predictable: the old road to La Guaira, known locally as La Carretera Vieja.
 
What began as a spontaneous road trip became one of the most memorable days I’ve had in Venezuela—filled with colour, contrast, warmth, and surprising human connection.
 
Winding Through Villages Above the City
 
As we left the city centre and started the winding climb into the hills, we entered a different world. The barrios and villages scattered along La Carretera Vieja each told their own story—places like El Limón, La Llanada, and El Manantial. These aren’t glossy postcard towns, but they are alive with character.
 
Homes painted in rich blues, reds, and greens climb the steep hills like a mosaic. Walls are adorned with hand-painted signs and murals—some joyful, some political, some simply decorative. In the dusty streets, children played, dogs dozed in the shade, and neighbours chatted over low garden fences. There’s no denying the poverty, the worn infrastructure, the challenges people here face. And yet, there is a sense of community and presence that many wealthier places could only dream of.
 
There’s music spilling from windows, aromas of frying arepas and coffee drifting in the air, and every so often, a breathtaking view opens over the lush green hills or even the sea far below. Nature here is wild and magnificent—trees heavy with fruit, clouds drifting low through the ravines, birds darting between rooftops. It’s a part of Caracas and its outskirts that many rarely see—but should.
 
From a Map to the Sea – Discovering Baltic Restaurant
 
As we finally descended toward La Guaira, we started thinking about where to eat. That’s when Google Maps led us to an unexpected gem—Baltic Restaurant.
 
The name immediately caught my attention. Intrigued (and feeling slightly homesick for the north), we followed the directions and soon found ourselves in a small, charming spot perched above the coast, with wide-open views of the Caribbean Sea. It felt quiet and unpretentious—an insider’s place rather than a tourist stop.
 
Inside, the décor was simple but tasteful. As soon as I met the owner, I had to ask: “Why Baltic?” He smiled and explained that he had once visited Poland, and that the Baltic Sea had left a deep impression on him. He loved its calmness, its colours, and the memories it evoked. That’s why he named the restaurant after it.
 
When I told him I was Polish, he grew visibly excited and warmly welcomed us. We talked for a while, and before we left, he even gave me a pair of wine glasses with the restaurant’s logo—a generous and touching gesture of connection across continents.
 
The food? Absolutely delicious. We had grilled seafood, crispy plantains, and fresh salads, accompanied by cold drinks and the soft sound of waves. The view was cinematic—mist hanging over distant hills, the water shimmering in the sun, fishing boats bobbing gently offshore. It felt like a reward for getting a little lost earlier in the day.
 
A Day to Remember
 
We made our way back to Caracas slowly, the hills turning golden in the afternoon light. Giovanni and I couldn’t stop talking about the villages, the landscapes, and the warm people we’d encountered along the way. What struck us both was that even in places marked by hardship, people smiled, offered help, and lived with unmistakable dignity and joy.
 
La Carretera Vieja gave us more than just a scenic drive—it gave us a window into the lives of people often overlooked, and reminded us how human stories are often found in the least expected corners of the map.
 
And to think it all started with a spontaneous drive and a Google Maps suggestion.

After several unforgettable weeks travelling through Poland, Malta, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Czechia, and Portugal, it’s time to return to Caracas. These final days of the trip have been filled with quiet emotion—meals with Mum, farewell walks through Nowy Sącz, a last visit to Paweł and Kasia, and a perfect pause in Lisbon before boarding the flight back to Venezuela.

Yesterday, Mum and I had our last meal together in a small restaurant in Stary Sącz. The atmosphere was peaceful, the conversation warm, both of us trying to savour every moment before goodbye. We wandered through town afterwards, soaking in the spring air and that soft melancholy that always comes with parting.

These last days were filled with small rituals: shopping for a few last things, one more stop by the river, sitting on our favourite bench in the sun. The ordinary became sacred simply because it was shared.

But this journey wasn't only about goodbyes. It’s been a spring rich with discovery and joy.

🇵🇱 Poland: Our time in Poland was deeply grounding. From the charming spa town of Krynica-Zdrój to the familiar comforts of Nowy Sącz, it felt good to slow down and be home. We explored Kraków during Constitution Day, wandered through Wawel, and shared long lunches in the old town. Spring in Poland is always special—alive, bright, and hopeful.

🇲🇹 Malta: From Kraków, we flew to Malta for three full days of Mediterranean sun and history. Valletta’s golden stone streets, the vibrant harbour of Marsaxlokk, and the clear waters of Gozo and the Blue Lagoon left us speechless. Mum especially loved the contrasts of Malta—how modern life wraps itself gently around ancient sites, and how every corner holds a story.

🇺🇿🇰🇿 Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan: Then came Central Asia—Tashkent’s calm elegance, Samarkand’s majestic mosques and madrasas, Shymkent’s sincerity and soul. For both of us, it was a completely new region, and we were amazed at every turn. Registan Square, the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, the lively conversations with our guide Larisa in Kazakhstan—these are moments I will never forget. Mum kept saying she never imagined she would see these places, and watching her light up with wonder was one of the greatest parts of the trip.

🇵🇱🇸🇰🇨🇿 More time in Poland, Slovakia and Czechia: Back in Poland, we welcomed Leo for a few days—a visit that added a special layer of joy to the entire holiday. It was his first time in Poland, and we were eager to share some of our favourite places with him. We spent time together in Kraków, walked along the Vistula River, visited Wawel Castle, and introduced him to the vibrant cafés and history of the old town. We also travelled to Morskie Oko, then crossed into Slovakia to hike in the stunning High Tatras. Experiencing the mountains together, surrounded by spring greenery and snow-capped peaks, felt both refreshing and deeply grounding.

We later visited Žilina, a lively and welcoming city with pastel-coloured buildings, wide pedestrian streets, and a laid-back café culture that immediately drew us in. Earlier in the trip, while visiting Cieszyn, Mum and I walked across the Olza River to Český Těšín in Czechia. It was a simple, quiet town—peaceful, local, real. The act of crossing a border on foot and suddenly hearing another language, seeing different signs, and picking up a new rhythm of life added so much depth to our journey. It reminded us how rich and interconnected this region truly is.

🇵🇹🇳🇱 Lisbon & Amsterdam: And finally—Lisbon. Originally planned as a smooth final stop, this part of the journey was affected by flight disruptions. I ended up transferring through Amsterdam, which meant spending many hours at Schiphol Airport and arriving in Lisbon much later than expected. As a result, I had very limited time to go out and explore the city.

Still, I made the most of it. The experience at Amsterdam airport, though long, was not unpleasant—people-watching, wandering through bookshops, and simply taking a breath between chapters of travel. And once in Lisbon, even with the short time, I enjoyed the familiar air of the city, the tiled façades, the Atlantic breeze. It was also my first time travelling with my Portuguese passport, which added a layer of quiet pride and emotion to the experience.
 
Now, I’m preparing for the long flight to Caracas. I feel rested, filled with stories, and more connected than I’ve felt in a long time. There’s work waiting for me—intense and challenging—but I carry this spring with me now. A reminder of what matters, and how good it is to feel at home in many places.

At last! After many conversations, plans, and longings across borders, Leo—my dear Venezuelan friend—finally made it to Poland from Spain. It was a short visit, just four days, but those four days were packed with joy, discovery, movement, and shared moments that we’ll both treasure for years. Welcoming Leo and showing him some of my favourite places in Poland and Slovakia, as well as introducing him to my family, was incredibly special.
 
He arrived in Kraków, where we spent the first night in a hotel and began our little adventure the following day. The weather was kind to us—sunny, though slightly chilly—and the air carried that late-spring clarity that makes every sight feel even more vivid.
 
Kraków – Wonder Through History
 
Our day in Kraków was a revelation for Leo. The Old Town immediately captured his heart. We walked the Royal Route, from the Floriańska Gate to the majestic Wawel Castle, letting the rhythm of centuries-old cobbled streets guide us. St. Mary’s Basilica, with its twin towers and richly decorated wooden altar by Veit Stoss, left Leo in awe. When the hourly trumpet call (hejnał) echoed across the Rynek Główny, I could see in his eyes how deeply moved he was.
 
Later, we wandered down to Kazimierz, Kraków’s historic Jewish quarter, with its atmospheric streets, old synagogues, and bohemian charm. Kazimierz always feels like a place of memory and resilience. We sat in a quiet café, talked about the layers of history all around us, and enjoyed simply being in a place so full of soul. Leo was visibly enchanted by Kraków, overwhelmed in the best way by its richness and beauty. Watching his reactions brought me a new perspective on a city I know so well—it was like seeing it for the first time again, through his eyes.
 
Home in Nowy Sącz – Family, Nature and Wooden Churches
 
From Kraków, we made our way to Nowy Sącz, where we stayed with my Mum—a warm and lively stop in the middle of our travels. I was so happy to introduce Leo to my family, and he was welcomed with the same warmth and curiosity he always inspires.
 
We quickly moved into exploring the wooden churches of the Lemko region, near the Slovak border—hidden gems scattered around Kamianna, Uście Gorlickie, and Wysowa-Zdrój. These UNESCO-listed wooden churches are masterpieces of Carpathian wooden architecture, built by local communities, often without a single nail, using timber and techniques passed down over generations. Their steep shingled roofs, onion domes, and painted interiors feel at once humble and sacred—reminders of a spiritual world rooted in earth, forest, and tradition. Leo was amazed by their beauty, harmony with the landscape, and their mysterious aura.
 
Crossing Borders – Bardejov, Krynica, and the Tatras
 
Our next stop took us across the border to Slovakia, to the spectacular town of Bardejov—a small but exquisitely preserved medieval town, with a UNESCO World Heritage status. Its perfect main square, Gothic St. Egidius Basilica, and colourful merchant houses left a strong impression on both of us. We spent a few lovely hours wandering, talking, and enjoying the rhythm of the town.
 
Returning to Poland, we stopped in Krynica-Zdrój, one of my favourite spa towns. Even for a brief visit, it was a pleasure to walk through its elegant streets and to show Leo the town’s distinct blend of 19th-century resort architecture and natural beauty.
 
In the evening, we had a family party at my brother’s house—a wonderful gathering full of laughter, great food, and animated conversation. Leo fit in seamlessly, making friends instantly, and it meant so much to me to see my two worlds—Polish and Venezuelan—connecting so easily.
 
The following day was all about mountains. We started with the Pieniny region, visiting Czorsztyn and Sromowce Niżne, where we crossed the footbridge over the Dunajec River into Slovakia, arriving at the Červený Kláštor (Red Monastery). It was a magical crossing—simple, symbolic, and filled with joy. Later, we travelled into the Tatra Mountains, visiting Bukowina Tatrzańska in Poland and Vysoké Tatry on the Slovak side. The landscapes took our breath away—majestic peaks, dramatic light, endless sky. It was a highlight of the trip, one of those days that feel timeless.
 
Leo couldn’t stop smiling. He loved the freedom of moving between countries, and we laughed when we counted: in just four days, he had entered Poland four times and Slovakia three times!
 
Farewell – Until the Next Time
 
On the final day, we took it easy. A bit of shopping in Nowy Sącz, some time to rest and chat, and finally, the drive to the airport. Saying goodbye was, as always, a bit bittersweet—but more than anything, I felt grateful. Grateful for these days together, for the chance to share a part of my world with Leo, and for the memories we now carry with us.
 
Having Leo here in Poland was a joy. I already look forward to more journeys together—more bridges to cross, more cities to explore, more laughs to share. Because when friendship travels, it leaves a trail of light behind.

As mid-May 2025 arrives, I continue to enjoy my time in southern Poland, relishing the slower rhythm of home, the gentle landscapes, and the quiet anticipation of welcoming my Venezuelan friend Leo, who will soon be arriving from Spain. These days have been a gift—calm, nourishing, and full of small joys.
 
The weather has been particularly kind. It’s not hot—just pleasantly mild—with long hours of daylight, bursts of sunshine, and occasional rain showers that lend the air a soft, romantic quality. The greenery around Nowy Sącz is intense and fresh, the kind that only exists in spring. Trees are in full bloom, rivers flow high, and the scent of lilacs and damp earth carries on the breeze.
 
In this serene atmosphere, I’ve taken the opportunity to revisit some of my favourite local places and to explore a few forgotten ones. A few days ago, I returned once again to Miasteczko Galicyjskie in Nowy Sącz—one of the region’s most charming historical sites. And then, almost on a whim, I decided to head east and visit Krosno, a town I hadn’t set foot in for many years. The trip turned out to be a delightful surprise.
 
Miasteczko Galicyjskie – A Living Time Capsule
 
The Galician Town (Miasteczko Galicyjskie) in Nowy Sącz is a remarkable open-air museum, part of the Ethnographic Park that recreates the life and architecture of a 19th-century Galician town—a region that once formed the easternmost crown land of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Walking through its cobbled streets is like stepping into a different time.
 
The town is composed of historically accurate wooden and brick buildings: a town hall, an inn, a post office, a barber’s shop, artisan workshops, and typical townhouses from across the former Galicia region. It’s a place that blends education with charm, offering visitors a tangible sense of how our ancestors lived, worked, and socialised. As always, I loved wandering through it—imagining conversations in Yiddish, Polish, and German; imagining horses trotting through the square and candles flickering behind small-paned windows.
 
It’s a site I return to often because it reminds me of the complexity of our local heritage—Polish, Jewish, Lemko, and Hungarian threads all woven together in what was once a vibrant multicultural tapestry. The Galicia of memory may be gone, but places like this help keep its spirit alive.
 
A Journey to Krosno – A Forgotten Gem Rediscovered
 
I hadn’t been to Krosno in years—so long, in fact, that I could hardly remember what it looked like. My expectations were modest, but as I entered the town and began to explore, I found myself genuinely impressed—even moved—by what I discovered.
 
Krosno, often called the “Glass City,” is located in the Subcarpathian region and has a history that stretches back to the Middle Ages. Once a thriving trade centre on the Hungarian route, Krosno developed a reputation for craft, commerce, and learning. In modern times, it became world-famous for its glass manufacturing, and its products are still exported around the globe.
 
But what captivated me most was the Old Town, which has undergone excellent restoration. The main square is beautifully preserved, with pastel façades, arcaded buildings, and the proud Tower of the Parish Church rising at the centre. The renovation has been done with care, preserving the character of the town without making it feel artificial or “overdone.” There’s authenticity in the details—old signs, cobblestone alleys, flower boxes, and the sound of church bells echoing off the stone.
 
Getting there was half the pleasure. The drive from Nowy Sącz took me through a series of winding roads and picturesque villages and small towns—each with its own rhythm and charm. Wooden churches, quiet meadows, roadside shrines, and sleepy town squares reminded me of how scenic and soul-stirring the Polish countryside can be when taken slowly.
 
Looking Ahead
 
As I write this, I’m feeling very grateful—for the calm of these days, for the beauty I’ve been able to rediscover, and for the time I’ve had with Mum, family, and close friends. And of course, I’m especially excited about Leo’s upcoming visit. I can’t wait to share some of this beauty with him, to show him the mountains, the towns, and the life here that feels so rooted and grounded. I know he’ll love it.
 
There’s still more time left in this holiday, and I plan to savour every remaining moment: more local excursions, more shared meals, more quiet walks, and meaningful conversations. After all the movement and distant places, these days close to home feel just as important—if not more so.

After the excitement of our travels to Malta, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, I’ve been enjoying some quieter, grounding time back home in Nowy Sącz. The weather has cooled down a bit—refreshing and gentle, perfect for small adventures and moments of reconnection. There’s a certain peace that comes with returning to familiar places, especially after a whirlwind of discoveries.
 
This week, I made sure to spend quality time with my brother and his family at their home in Nowy Sącz. We caught up, shared stories, and as a small token from Venezuela, I brought them a bottle of Venezuelan rum—a gift carefully chosen by my dear friend Giovanni. Sharing it felt like connecting two different parts of my world, and it was warmly received.
 
A Day Trip Across Borders – Cieszyn & Český Těšín
 
Yesterday, Mum and I, together with our lovely neighbours, set out on a spontaneous road trip to the border city of Cieszyn, which straddles Poland and the Czech Republic. Cieszyn has always fascinated me, not just for its charm, but for its layered, often complex history.
 
Originally a single city, Cieszyn was divided in 1920, after the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and a territorial dispute between the newly formed Second Polish Republic and Czechoslovakia. The conflict, known as the Polish–Czechoslovak War, ended in arbitration, splitting the city along the Olza River. Today, Cieszyn lies in Poland and Český Těšín in the Czech Republic. Despite the physical separation, the two towns remain closely intertwined, culturally and socially. It’s a striking example of how borders can divide spaces but not necessarily people.
 
We began our walk on the Polish side, taking in the beauty of the historic market square, the Piast Tower, and the peaceful Olza riverbanks. Crossing the border on foot into Český Těšín felt seamless—no checkpoints, just a symbolic crossing into another chapter of shared heritage.
 
In Český Těšín, we had a delightful lunch at a local restaurant, where we sampled dumplings filled with bryndza—a creamy sheep cheese that’s beloved in this region. Mum and our neighbours also tried some excellent Czech beer, brewed with the care and tradition that the Czech lands are so rightly proud of. The meal was unpretentious, comforting, and truly satisfying—another reminder that simple pleasures often leave the strongest impressions.
 
Through Czechia and Slovakia – A Stop in Žilina
 
Instead of heading straight back, we chose a scenic return route through Czechia and Slovakia, which allowed us to stop in Žilina, a small city nestled in the north-western part of Slovakia. Žilina, located near the confluence of the Váh, Kysuca, and Rajčanka rivers, is a city with a long and intriguing history.
 
First mentioned in 1208, Žilina grew over centuries as a market town and later an industrial hub under Austro-Hungarian rule. Though modest in size, the city boasts a beautifully preserved Old Town, with a central square framed by arcaded houses and the striking Church of the Holy Trinity. We enjoyed a short but rewarding walk, followed by drinks at a relaxed outdoor café—watching locals go about their evening routines in the golden light of early summer.
 
The drive from Žilina back to Nowy Sącz was simply spectacular. As we wound our way through the mountains, we were treated to panoramic views of the Tatras, their peaks still dusted with snow, even in May. The landscape shifted between deep forests, green meadows, and dramatic rock formations—a visual feast that reminded us of how truly beautiful this corner of Europe is.
 
We reached home around 21:00, tired but happy, our heads filled with impressions from the day. It was the kind of trip that balances discovery with simplicity—a local adventure, shared with people we care about, rich in conversation and full of unexpected delight.

In May 2025, Mum and I had the extraordinary privilege of embarking on a journey we had long dreamed of—a visit to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, two remarkable countries at the crossroads of ancient civilisations, empires, and cultures. The trip turned out to be everything we hoped for and so much more: a deeply moving, enlightening, and at times unexpected adventure through places that have shaped the world in ways we are only now beginning to fully appreciate.
 
It was a fantastic journey in every sense—emotionally rich, culturally fascinating, and made all the more special by sharing it with Mum. We travelled through Tashkent, Samarkand, and Shymkent, crossing borders, braving the intense Central Asian heat, and constantly being amazed by the warmth of the people we met.
 
Samarkand – A Jewel of Human Civilization
 
Without a doubt, the crown jewel of our trip was Samarkand. A city of almost mythical reputation, Samarkand exceeded every expectation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world—its roots going back to the 7th century BC—and once served as a vital centre on the Silk Road, the ancient trade network connecting China with the Mediterranean.
 
Walking through Registan Square, surrounded by the towering, tiled facades of three madrasahs, we were left speechless. The intricate Islamic art, symmetry, and colour were not only beautiful but deeply symbolic, evoking centuries of learning, spirituality, and cross-cultural dialogue. We felt like we had stepped into a living history book—only more vivid, more moving, and more inspiring than any text could convey.
 
We were particularly touched by how much of the world’s scientific and philosophical heritage has roots here. Figures like Ulugh Beg, the 15th-century astronomer and mathematician who built one of the greatest observatories of the medieval world, were central to the development of astronomy. Scholars in Bukhara and Samarkand were translating, preserving, and expanding on the knowledge of antiquity while much of Europe was still in the Dark Ages. This legacy—of scholarship, discovery, and humanism—filled us with admiration and humility.
 
To stand in a city where knowledge was once a currency more powerful than gold felt both inspiring and sobering. It reminded us how interwoven our global history truly is, and how much we owe to civilisations we often overlook in Western narratives.
 
Shymkent – An Unexpected Favourite
 
After crossing the border by foot—a messy but memorable experience, particularly for Mum, who handled it with patience and curiosity—we arrived in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. While not a “classic beauty” like Samarkand, Shymkent surprised and impressed us in ways that lingered long after we left.
 
There was something deeply authentic about Shymkent. It bears clear traces of its Soviet past—monolithic apartment blocks, wide boulevards, remnants of faded ideological murals—but this resonated with us as Poles. We recognised that strange blend of melancholy and resilience, and it made the city feel oddly familiar.
 
What truly won our hearts in Shymkent was our guide, Larisa—a brilliant, kind-hearted Kazakh-Russian woman whose depth of knowledge was matched only by her warmth and humanity. With quiet dignity and great insight, she helped us understand not only the region’s history, but also the social and emotional layers left behind by communism, independence, and rapid transformation. Her stories, humour, and grace stayed with us and added a profound human dimension to this part of our trip.
 
Tashkent – Surprising and Elegant
 
We began and ended our journey in Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s capital, and what a surprise it was. We had expected a functional, possibly overwhelming post-Soviet metropolis. Instead, we discovered a clean, spacious, and remarkably well-managed city that felt truly designed with its residents in mind.
 
Tashkent is a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity. The city’s metro system—decorated with artistic mosaics, chandeliers, and architectural flourishes—is not just efficient, but beautiful, like a museum beneath the ground. Wide boulevards are lined with trees and public parks, and the sights, such as Khast Imam Square, the Chorsu Bazaar, and Amir Timur Square, gave us insight into both the country’s proud heritage and its confident present.
 
What struck us most, however, was the kindness of the people. Everywhere we went, we were met with openness and generosity—strangers offered help, smiles were genuine, and conversations with locals added richness to each day. Despite the heat (and it was very hot), the spirit of Tashkent felt fresh and forward-looking.
 
A Bittersweet Goodbye
 
As we boarded our flight back to Warsaw, both Mum and I felt a mix of sadness and gratitude. It was difficult to leave this part of the world—a place that had welcomed us so warmly and taught us so much in such a short time. We knew we had only scratched the surface. Central Asia, with its layers of history, deep humanity, and astonishing beauty, had captured our hearts.
 
This journey was not just about ticking destinations off a list—it was about learning, connecting, and feeling part of something larger. It reminded us of how much we still have to discover and how rewarding it is to remain curious, open, and willing to engage with unfamiliar cultures on their own terms.
 
We left Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan not only impressed and inspired, but with a deep longing to return. And we will—because some places leave a mark so profound that you know your story with them isn’t over yet.

After my return from Caracas in April 2025, I had the joy of reconnecting with two places that are closest to my heart—Nowy Sącz, my hometown, and the historic city of Kraków. These quiet moments in southern Poland were a welcome interlude before continuing onward to new adventures. In between our travels to Malta and Uzbekistan, Mum and I spent a couple of lovely days in Kraków, which turned out to be especially memorable, as our visit coincided with 3rd May Constitution Day—a national holiday rich in symbolism and meaning for Poles everywhere.
 
Nowy Sącz – Where My Roots Are
 
As always, being back in Nowy Sącz brought a deep sense of grounding. The town’s location in the foothills of the Beskid Mountains and its layered cultural history make it a place where tradition and memory live side by side. Its Old Market Square, the family home, and the nearby hills are not just landmarks but emotional signposts that connect me to who I am and where I come from. This is a place where every street evokes stories—of childhood, family gatherings, friendships, and life’s turning points.
 
Kraków – A Pause with History and Celebration
 
Kraków, with all its splendour, greeted us with festive elegance. 3rd May is one of the most important holidays in Poland, commemorating the adoption of the Constitution of 3 May 1791—the first modern constitution in Europe and the second in the world, after the United States. It was a bold, visionary attempt to reform the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, strengthening democratic governance and civil rights at a time when absolutism still dominated much of Europe.
 
Although the constitution’s effects were short-lived due to the eventual partitions of Poland, its legacy has remained deeply symbolic. For generations, the 3rd of May has represented hope, reform, and a proud moment of Polish intellectual and political courage. During communist times, celebrating the holiday was forbidden, and yet it remained alive in people’s hearts. Today, it’s an official public holiday and a cherished occasion for national pride.
 
Being in Kraków on this day made it all the more special. The city was buzzing with a gentle kind of festivity—Polish flags fluttering from balconies, choirs and orchestras performing patriotic songs in the open air, families enjoying the spring sunshine in the streets and parks. It felt like a celebration not just of history, but of continuity and resilience.
 
We focused our time on Kraków’s city centre, exploring the heart of the Old Town, which is one of the most beautiful and historically preserved medieval city centres in Europe. We admired the majestic Wawel Castle, once home to Polish kings and still a powerful symbol of sovereignty and nationhood. From there, we wandered along the Royal Route, through the Rynek Główny, with its Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) and St. Mary’s Basilica, both icons of Kraków’s grandeur.
 
A particularly meaningful stop was the Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364 and one of the oldest in the world. As we stood in the courtyard of the Collegium Maius, I reflected on how this very institution had nurtured the minds of thinkers, scientists, and leaders—including Copernicus—and how it continues to play a vital role in shaping the intellectual fabric of Poland.
 
A Meal to Remember
 
As the day warmed, Mum and I enjoyed a long and relaxing lunch at a Czech restaurant just off the main square. The food was comforting and generous—dumplings, hearty sauces, and cold drinks—and the setting gave us time to slow down, talk, and simply enjoy being in the moment. These shared meals in beautiful surroundings are often the memories that linger the longest. It was one of those small but perfect travel moments—unhurried, joyful, and full of connection.
 
A Perfect Pause
 
These days in Nowy Sącz and Kraków were not just a pause between travels—they were a return to the source, a reminder of what grounds me before continuing forward. Being back in familiar places, especially with Mum by my side, reminded me that home is not only where we come from, but where we feel known, rooted, and whole.
 
This visit also reminded me of the beauty and richness of Polish history, and how important it is to hold on to the moments of pride and resilience, just like the 3rd of May Constitution Day invites us to do.

In early May 2025, just a few weeks after my return from Venezuela, Mum and I embarked on a brief but beautiful escape—to the Mediterranean jewel of Malta. We boarded a direct flight from Kraków to Luqa International Airport, filled with excitement and curiosity. Although the trip lasted only three days, those days were filled to the brim—with exploration, sunlight, laughter, and meaningful time together.
 
This getaway was our opportunity to be fully present with one another after months apart. The chance to travel with Mum is always a privilege I deeply value. Whether in quiet conversations or shared silences while taking in a view, these moments together are never taken for granted. Malta, in all its golden beauty and cultural richness, offered the perfect setting for such moments.
 
Valletta – A Capital of Stone and Soul
 
We stayed in Valletta, Malta’s small but majestic capital. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in history, elegance, and atmosphere. Built by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century after the Great Siege, Valletta is a city of limestone ramparts, sun-drenched balconies, and narrow streets that echo with centuries of stories.
 
Everywhere we turned, there was something to marvel at—St. John’s Co-Cathedral, whose unassuming façade gives way to an explosion of Baroque splendour; the Grandmaster’s Palace, a reminder of Malta’s chivalric past; and the Upper Barrakka Gardens, where we paused to gaze over the Grand Harbour, feeling the warm breeze and watching ferries glide below. Valletta felt like a city suspended in time—its past ever-present, but not weighed down by it.
 
Even the everyday corners of the city—the quiet piazzas, the tucked-away cafés, the ornate door knockers on every street—told a story of a people rooted in tradition yet welcoming of the world. Malta’s dual identity as both European and uniquely Maltese is felt most strongly in Valletta. The Maltese language, with its Arabic, Italian, and English influences, echoes the island’s complex past, and yet everything feels easy to navigate and warm in spirit.
 
The South and East – Fishing Villages and Sea Caves
 
On our second day, we ventured beyond the capital to explore the southern and eastern parts of the island. Our first stop was the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, famous for its colourful luzzu boats bobbing in the bay. The boats—painted in rich shades of red, yellow, green, and blue—are not just beautiful but symbolic, each adorned with the Eye of Osiris to ward off bad luck at sea.
 
The promenade was alive with life—open-air cafés, locals selling honey and lace, children playing along the shore. We had a delicious seafood lunch and watched as the market bustled with both locals and curious visitors. Mum and I found ourselves chatting for hours, watching the ebb and flow of life around us, enjoying the simplicity of being far away from routine.
 
Later that day, we visited the Blue Grotto, a series of natural sea caves on the southwestern coast. The water, reflecting the sunlight against the white limestone, glowed in shades of cobalt and turquoise. We took a short boat ride beneath the cliffs, and the moment felt almost surreal—nature at its most artful. It reminded us how much beauty can exist in quiet, hidden corners of the world.
 
Gozo and the Blue Lagoon – Malta’s Natural Gems
 
On our final day, we joined a small group tour to Gozo and Comino, two of Malta’s smaller islands, and a world apart from the capital’s buzz. Gozo immediately enchanted us with its peaceful landscapes, terraced fields, and slower pace of life. We visited the Citadel in Victoria, a fortified city with panoramic views of the island, and wandered through quaint villages with churches that seemed far grander than their surroundings would suggest.
 
In Gozo, time seemed to move more gently. People greeted one another in the streets. The scent of citrus and wild herbs lingered in the air. Mum and I both felt it—a kind of quiet magic that comes with simplicity and space to breathe.
 
From Gozo, we continued on to Comino’s Blue Lagoon—a place that almost defies description. The water was so clear and so blue that it felt like we had stepped into a painting. We swam and relaxed on the rocks, letting the sun warm our faces. Surrounded by shimmering sea and pale cliffs, it was the perfect way to conclude our visit.
 
Malta – A Place of Many Layers
 
What makes Malta truly fascinating is not only its beauty, but its depth. Despite being one of Europe’s smallest countries, it has layer upon layer of history and influence: from prehistoric temples older than the pyramids to the legacies of Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and the British. The Knights of St. John left an indelible mark—not only in architecture but also in the ethos of service and resilience that seems to characterise the Maltese people. The country’s dual linguistic identity—Maltese and English—adds to its accessibility, while its Mediterranean heart gives it warmth in every interaction.
 
Even in such a short time, Malta left a lasting impression on both of us. It was a place where the ancient and modern coexist gracefully, where every stone holds a story, and where every meal, sunset, and conversation felt a little more vivid.
 
More than anything, it was the time with Mum that made the trip truly special. Exploring a new country side by side, learning together, talking without hurry—it was a reminder of how travel deepens connection not only with the world, but with the people we share it with.
 
This May weekend in Malta was a brief chapter in our journey, but one we will remember for years. It marked the beginning of my holiday season in 2025, and it couldn’t have begun on a better note: with sunshine, discovery, and the quiet joy of being together.

After the long journey from Caracas to Nowy Sącz in April 2025, I wanted nothing more than to spend some peaceful, joyful time with my mother. To celebrate our reunion and the beginning of my holidays, we decided to take a day trip to one of the most charming places in southern Poland—Krynica-Zdrój. It turned out to be a perfect choice.
 
The day was everything we could have hoped for: bright spring sunshine, lush greenery everywhere, and a vibrant atmosphere as people flocked to enjoy the beauty of the season. Together, we talked, laughed, and simply savoured each other’s company, grateful for the moments of closeness after months apart.
 
Krynica-Zdrój, often referred to simply as Krynica, is one of Poland’s most beloved spa towns, known for its healing mineral waters and stunning architecture. Nestled in the foothills of the Beskid Sądecki mountains, the town combines natural beauty with elegant charm. Krynica’s history as a spa resort dates back to the 19th century, when it became a fashionable destination for those seeking rest and recuperation. Even today, it retains a nostalgic air of a bygone era, while still welcoming visitors with modern amenities.
 
One of the highlights of our visit was taking the delightful little funicular railway to the top of Góra Parkowa. The “Góra Parkowa train,” as it is affectionately known, has been carrying visitors up the hill since 1937. The ride, though short, is a journey into another world: as we ascended, the panorama of Krynica opened up below us, bathed in spring light. At the top, we strolled around the Parkowa Mountain Park, enjoying the views, the fresh mountain air, and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by nature.
 
Back in the centre of Krynica, we wandered through its beautifully preserved streets. The architecture of the town is a feast for the eyes—an eclectic blend of Art Nouveau, Swiss-style wooden villas, and historic spa houses. Among the gems are the Old Spa House (Stary Dom Zdrojowy) with its grandiose façade, and the picturesque Wooden Pump Room (Pijalnia Główna), where visitors can still sample the town’s famous mineral waters. Every corner of Krynica seemed to whisper stories of its golden age, when it was frequented by writers, artists, and aristocrats seeking health and inspiration.
 
After spending a few wonderful hours exploring, we decided to extend our adventure and return to Nowy Sącz via Muszyna, driving along the enchanting road that hugs the Polish-Slovak border. The scenery was breathtaking—gentle hills, dense forests, and the winding Poprad River creating a serene landscape that felt untouched by time.
 
On the way, we passed through Żegiestów, a once-renowned spa town that shares the same cultural and geographical tapestry as Krynica. Żegiestów, like much of this border region, is steeped in a rich, complex history, blending Polish, Slovak, and Lemko traditions. Though quieter than Krynica today, its old spa buildings and natural beauty hint at its former splendour. The entire Polish-Slovak borderland is an area of unique charm, where cultures meet and nature reigns supreme.
 
As we drove home, with the sun slowly setting behind the hills, both Mum and I felt a deep sense of contentment. It had been a simple day, but a profoundly beautiful one—a celebration of family, spring, and the deep roots that connect us to home.
 
This trip to Krynica was not just a lovely excursion; it was the perfect beginning to my holiday, a gentle and heartwarming reminder of the simple joys that matter most.

In April 2025, I embarked on a long-awaited month-long holiday, a journey that would take me from Caracas, Venezuela, to my hometown of Nowy Sącz in Poland. This album captures the essence of that journey through the airports I passed along the way—each one a gateway not just to another destination, but to emotions, memories, and small rituals that have accompanied me throughout my life.
 
Airports have always been an integral part of my story. They are places where excitement and nostalgia intertwine, where the thrill of new adventures meets the bittersweetness of departures and reunions. I love airports for the promise they hold—the unknown that lies just beyond the gate—and for the simple joy of people-watching: observing countless stories unfolding in every smile, every farewell, every hurried step.
 
The journey began at Caracas International Airport (Simón Bolívar International Airport), often referred to simply as Maiquetía. With its chaotic charm, it mirrors the spirit of Venezuela itself—vibrant, sometimes unpredictable, but always full of life. As I waited for my flight, the Caribbean breeze sneaking into the terminal reminded me how close Caracas lies to the sea, and how departures from here always feel a little more tropical, a little more emotional.
 
Next came Lisbon Airport (Humberto Delgado Airport), my gateway into Europe. Lisbon’s airport, though modest in size compared to some major hubs, carries a warmth and friendliness that reflects Portugal’s character. It feels less like a machine and more like a welcoming parlour, where the smell of coffee and pastel de nata sweetens even the longest layovers. Passing through Lisbon, I could sense the Atlantic’s spirit, the legacy of explorers who once sailed into the unknown.
 
From Lisbon, I flew into Warsaw Chopin Airport, Poland’s busiest and most important air hub. Named after the beloved composer, the airport strikes a balance between modern efficiency and a distinctly Polish soul. Walking through its corridors, I felt an overwhelming sense of returning to my roots—the familiar language, the familiar faces, the rhythm of life that, no matter how far I travel, always pulls me back. Warsaw’s airport is like Poland itself: proud, resilient, and deeply human.
 
The final leg of my air journey took me to Kraków John Paul II International Airport, a place smaller but filled with a special kind of warmth. Kraków’s airport feels almost personal, reflecting the historic city it serves. It carries with it a sense of tradition, quiet dignity, and a hint of excitement, knowing that home lies just beyond the horizon. Landing there felt like stepping through a portal from my wider world travels into the embrace of my own past and present.
 
And finally, after these many transitions, I reached my destination: Nowy Sącz. The town where my roots are deepest, where every corner tells a story of family, growth, and belonging.
 
This album, with its snapshots from terminals and gates, is not just about the airports themselves. It is about the movement they represent—the in-betweens that shape our journeys as much as the destinations do.

In March 2025, I travelled from Caracas to Spain for a week—an important journey filled with meaning. I went to visit Leo, my dear Venezuelan friend, to check on how he was settling into his new life in Spain. It was his first time living in Europe, and I was eager to see how he was adapting to this new chapter.

The trip was also a chance to spend time with Marta and her family in Boadilla del Monte, outside of Madrid. Marta has been a key figure in supporting Leo’s transition and is a truly special person in my life—more like a sister than a friend.

A Getaway to Seville – Andalusia’s Crown Jewel

Together with Leo, we took the train to Seville and spent three days exploring this magical city. From the moment we arrived, Seville enchanted us with its warmth, history, and vibrant energy.
• We wandered through the Santa Cruz quarter, with its narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and flower-draped balconies.
• The Cathedral of Seville and the Giralda Tower were breathtaking. We climbed to the top for a sweeping view of the city’s rooftops and distant hills.
• One of the true highlights was visiting the Real Alcázar, a palace of extraordinary beauty. Its blend of Islamic and Christian architecture, the tranquil gardens, and the intricate tilework left us speechless.
• We also took a boat cruise along the Guadalquivir River, which Leo especially loved. Floating gently along the water, passing under historic bridges and alongside colourful buildings, offered a whole new perspective on the city. The breeze, the light, the calm of the river—it was a perfect moment.
• We walked along Plaza de España, admired its grandeur, and even sat by the canal watching families and street musicians bring the square to life.

Seville was a place where we could both relax, explore, and reflect. The time there felt like a gift—joyful, soulful, and full of beauty.

Home with Marta – Boadilla del Monte

After returning from Seville, we stayed in Boadilla del Monte with Marta and her family. Even though it rained nearly the entire time, we still enjoyed every minute. Marta’s home is filled with warmth, kindness, and laughter. We shared stories, meals, and quiet moments—something I deeply appreciated.

Boadilla itself, despite the gloomy weather, has its own charm. With green spaces, historic buildings, and a peaceful atmosphere, it offered a perfect setting for reconnecting and regrouping before heading back.

It was truly moving to see Leo being supported by such generous people, and despite missing Venezuela, he is beginning to find his way in this new world.

A Meaningful Visit

Soon it was time to return to Caracas. But I left Spain feeling proud of Leo, grateful to Marta and her family, and reminded of the strength of friendship. This trip was more than a visit—it was a reminder of how people carry each other across borders, with kindness, patience, and love.

As 2025 begins, I look forward to another year of living and working in Caracas, a city that continues to fascinate and surprise me. While most of my time will be spent in the capital, where my office is based, I hope to explore more of Venezuela—a country of stunning landscapes, rich culture, and incredible resilience.

I feel grateful to be part of a dedicated team, working alongside colleagues from the EU Delegation and humanitarian partners who are committed to supporting communities across the country. The challenges are significant, but so is the determination and solidarity of those working to make a difference.

With the year ahead, I hope to deepen my understanding of Venezuela, from its bustling cities to its remote regions, and to continue discovering the stories, history, and warmth that make this country so unique.

At the end of December 2024, I had the chance to spend a memorable evening in La Guaira, a charming coastal town just outside Caracas. My friend Giovanni was kind enough to drive me there and show me around, making the visit even more special.

A Town Steeped in History and Colonial Beauty

La Guaira is a living piece of Venezuelan history, boasting a beautifully restored colonial old town that transports visitors to a bygone era. The streets are lined with pastel-coloured buildings, their wrought iron balconies and wooden shutters adding to the old-world charm. Under the warm glow of the setting sun, the town feels almost like a painting, where history and modern life blend seamlessly.
• The cobblestone streets are dotted with quaint cafés and small restaurants, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a quiet meal.
• The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and local delicacies mingles with the salty sea breeze, creating an atmosphere that is both relaxing and invigorating.
• As the evening progresses, the town’s plazas come to life, filled with locals chatting, laughing, and even dancing spontaneously to traditional Venezuelan music.

The Tragedia de Vargas – A Story of Resilience

Despite its beauty, La Guaira carries a heavy history. The town was severely impacted by the devastating “Tragedia de Vargas” in 1999, when torrential rains triggered catastrophic mudslides, destroying entire neighbourhoods and leaving thousands dead or displaced.

Yet, La Guaira’s people refused to be defined by disaster. The town has slowly rebuilt itself, and today, its restored streets, thriving businesses, and vibrant community spirit stand as a testament to resilience and renewal.

The Scenic Drive from Caracas to the Coast

The journey from Caracas to La Guaira is an experience in itself. The road winds down from the mountains towards the Caribbean coast, offering:
• Breathtaking views of both urban barrios and lush tropical landscapes.
• Street art and murals that tell stories of Venezuelan identity and history.
• Dramatic glimpses of the sea, where the coastline stretches endlessly against the horizon.

Beyond La Guaira – Coastal Escapes

For those with more time, La Guaira is also the gateway to beautiful nearby beaches.
• Macuto – A relaxed seaside area, known for its boardwalk, seafood restaurants, and scenic ocean views.
• Catia La Mar – A popular destination for beach lovers and surfers, offering a mix of local markets, fresh seafood, and vibrant beach culture.

A Town That Leaves an Impression

La Guaira is a place where history, resilience, and community converge. It is a town that has endured great hardship yet remains full of life, culture, and beauty.

As I left La Guaira that evening, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience—for the chance to walk its historic streets, witness its spirit of renewal, and take in the breathtaking coastal scenery.

This visit was a reminder of Venezuela’s remarkable ability to blend past and present, struggle and strength, sorrow and joy—all within a single sunset.

At the beginning of December 2024, after an incredible stopover in Trinidad and Tobago, I arrived in Barbados for a week-long retreat—a much-needed break from the intensity of life in Caracas. From the moment I stepped off the plane, the island’s warmth, turquoise waters, and golden sands embraced me, offering the perfect escape.

Barbados – A Blend of Nature and History

Barbados is more than just a tropical paradise; it’s an island where natural beauty, colonial heritage, and vibrant culture come together seamlessly. While the beaches are undoubtedly stunning, what struck me most was the diversity of landscapes—from the calm, picture-perfect western shores to the wild, rugged coastline of the east, where Atlantic waves crash dramatically against the cliffs.

Exploring Bridgetown – A UNESCO Treasure

With a rental car, I had the freedom to explore beyond the usual tourist spots, and my first stop was Bridgetown, the island’s historic capital. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bridgetown’s charm lies in its colonial-era architecture, lively streets, and deep-rooted history.
• The Parliament Buildings, with their neo-Gothic design, stood as proud reminders of Barbados’ political heritage.
• Walking through the Garrison Savannah, I could almost hear echoes of the island’s past as a British military stronghold.
• The city’s markets and waterfront promenade were filled with locals and visitors, creating a bustling yet relaxed atmosphere.

Bridgetown isn’t just about history—it’s a living, breathing city, where past and present blend effortlessly.

Barbados Beyond the City – Gardens, Coastlines, and Hidden Gems

Venturing further into the interior of the island, I discovered a landscape of rolling hills and lush tropical greenery, a stark yet serene contrast to the coastline.
• Hunte’s Gardens – A botanical masterpiece, this hidden oasis felt like stepping into a magical world. With winding pathways, towering palms, and bursts of vibrant flowers, it was an intimate and peaceful escape.
• Andromeda Botanic Gardens – This place offered a more wild, untamed beauty, with an incredible variety of tropical plants and breathtaking views of the Atlantic coast.

These gardens were not just about plants—they were places to slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the richness of Barbadian nature.

A Special Tribute – Visiting Rihanna Drive

A visit to Rihanna Drive was a must. Seeing the humble beginnings of one of the world’s biggest superstars, I couldn’t help but feel inspired. The street, named in honour of Barbados’ most famous cultural icon, was alive with local pride, a reminder of how talent and perseverance can take someone from a small island to global stardom.

Barbadian Cuisine – A Feast for the Senses

No Caribbean adventure is complete without indulging in local flavours, and Barbados did not disappoint.
• Fresh seafood was a constant delight—grilled lobster, flying fish, and mahi-mahi, all prepared with bold Caribbean spices.
• At beachside shacks, I enjoyed simple yet delicious fish cakes, packed with flavour.
• The highlight? The famous Friday night fish fry in Oistins—a lively gathering where locals and visitors come together to enjoy freshly grilled fish, music, and the island’s joyful energy.

Moments of Peace and Reflection

Beyond the exploration and culinary adventures, Barbados offered something even greater—tranquillity. Whether it was:
• Walking on an empty stretch of beach at sunrise.
• Driving along the coastal roads with the ocean breeze in my hair.
• Chatting with friendly locals, whose stories and warmth made the island feel even more special.

This trip wasn’t just a holiday; it was a reminder of the joy of slowing down, connecting with nature, and appreciating the present moment.

Leaving Barbados – A Heart Full of Gratitude

After a week of sun, sea, culture, and relaxation, I boarded my flight back to Caracas, feeling happy and refreshed. Barbados had given me the perfect reset, and I knew that one day, I would return to its shores.

On 30th November 2024, I had the unexpected opportunity to set foot in Trinidad and Tobago for the first time. While travelling from Caracas to Barbados with Caribbean Airlines, I had a 10-hour layover in Port of Spain, which was just enough time to explore a glimpse of this fascinating country.

I arranged a guided tour in advance and was lucky to have Andrew as my guide. His passion for his country, along with his deep knowledge of its history, culture, and landscapes, made the day even more memorable.

Port of Spain – A City of Colour and Energy

Our journey began with a drive through Port of Spain, a city that immediately pulsates with life. It’s a place where colonial history meets Caribbean vibrancy, with colourful wooden houses, graceful 19th-century mansions, and modern high-rises standing side by side.
• The streets were alive with energy—vendors selling fresh fruit, people chatting on street corners, and the sound of Soca and Calypso music spilling out of shops.
• Andrew shared stories of the city’s past, explaining how Spanish, British, African, Indian, and Indigenous influences have shaped its multicultural identity.
• As we passed by Queen’s Park Savannah, the city’s vast green space, he pointed out the Magnificent Seven, a collection of ornate colonial-era buildings that stand as remnants of Port of Spain’s grand architectural heritage.

Fort George – A Window into Trinidad’s Past

Leaving the city, we made our way up to Fort George, perched high on the hills overlooking Port of Spain. Built in 1804 by the British, the fort was originally intended to defend the island from invasions, though it never saw battle.
• From this strategic vantage point, I gazed out at sweeping views of the Gulf of Paria, the city below, and even glimpses of Venezuela in the distance.
• The fort’s old cannons and stone walls stood as reminders of Trinidad’s colonial past, while the surrounding lush greenery added a sense of serenity.
• Standing there, I couldn’t help but reflect on how many ships, empires, and generations have looked out at the same view.

Maracas Beach – A Caribbean Paradise

From Fort George, we took a winding road north towards Maracas Beach, passing through dense rainforest-covered hills. The drive itself was spectacular—steep cliffs, emerald-green vegetation, and glimpses of the deep blue sea appearing between the trees.

Then, suddenly, the forest opened up, and before us lay Maracas Beach, one of Trinidad’s most famous and beloved coastal spots.
• The golden sands stretched between the turquoise waters and the thick jungle, creating a picture-perfect scene.
• The waves crashed gently, inviting surfers and swimmers alike.
• The laid-back Caribbean atmosphere was infectious—locals and tourists alike lounging under palm trees, enjoying the warm tropical breeze.

The Famous Bake and Shark

No trip to Maracas Beach is complete without trying bake and shark, a local delicacy that has become an icon of Trinidadian cuisine.
• The dish consists of seasoned and fried shark fillet served inside a crispy, golden bake (a type of fried bread).
• The best part? The customisable toppings—from tangy tamarind sauce and spicy pepper sauce to fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and pineapple.
• I loaded mine up and took my first bite—an explosion of flavours that perfectly matched the relaxed beachside setting.

Sitting by the sea, watching the waves roll in, and enjoying this uniquely Trinidadian meal was an unforgettable moment.

A Sunset Farewell to Trinidad

As the afternoon faded, we began our return journey to the airport, stopping at one final viewpoint in the hills. As the sunset painted the sky in gold, orange, and pink, I took one last deep breath of the humid Caribbean air and reflected on the day.
• The kindness of the people.
• The rich cultural mix.
• The stunning natural beauty.

Trinidad had given me just a small taste of what it has to offer, and I knew immediately—I need to return.
Soon, I was boarding my flight to Barbados, filled with excitement for the next chapter of my Caribbean adventure.

In November 2024, I travelled to Sucre State with colleagues from the German Embassy and the German Red Cross to gain a deeper understanding of the humanitarian work carried out by the Venezuelan Red Cross in the region. The trip provided a firsthand look at the health, education, nutrition, and disaster preparedness programmes supported by humanitarian organisations.

The Journey to Cumaná – Experiencing Northern Venezuela

We travelled by car to Cumaná, passing through several towns and cities, each offering a glimpse into the diverse landscapes and cultural richness of northern Venezuela. Our route took us through:
• Petare – A vibrant yet densely populated area on the outskirts of Caracas, known for its contrasts between urban challenges and community resilience.
• El Guapo – A small town surrounded by lush greenery, offering a sense of the rural beauty of Venezuela.
• Capital Manuel Ezequiel Bruzual – Here, we stopped for lunch, enjoying a moment to take in the surroundings.
• Barcelona, Puerto la Cruz, and Guanta – This stretch of the journey showcased coastal landscapes, bustling port towns, and urban life, giving us a better sense of regional dynamics.

The long drive to Cumaná was a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of Venezuela, from mountains and rivers to coastal plains, making the journey as rewarding as the mission itself.

Cumaná – Witnessing Humanitarian Efforts on the Ground

Cumaná, the oldest European-founded city in South America, was our destination. Here, we visited several Venezuelan Red Cross programmes, focusing on:
• Health services – Supporting vulnerable communities with medical care, vaccinations, and maternal health.
• Education initiatives – Providing access to learning opportunities for children affected by economic hardship.
• Nutrition and food security projects – Addressing malnutrition and improving access to nutritious meals.
• Disaster preparedness efforts – Strengthening local response capacity in communities prone to climate-related emergencies.

Post-Hurricane Beryl Response

One of the key focuses of the mission was to assess the response to Hurricane Beryl, which had recently impacted Sucre and other coastal areas. The visit highlighted:
• Emergency relief efforts in affected communities.
• Restoration of infrastructure in schools and health centres.
• Community resilience programmes to prepare for future disasters.

The dedication and professionalism of the Venezuelan Red Cross teams were truly inspiring. Despite limited resources, their commitment to serving vulnerable populations was evident in every project we visited.

Returning to Caracas – Reflecting on the Mission

After three insightful days in Sucre, I returned to Caracas by plane, grateful for the opportunity to witness the impact of humanitarian work firsthand.

On 7th July 2024, together with Leo and colleagues from the EU Delegation in Caracas, we joined the Caracas Pride March, an event filled with joy, colour, and a strong message of equality. This year’s theme, “United in Diversity,” resonated deeply, emphasising the importance of inclusion, respect, and human rights for all. The march was supported by the European Union, reflecting its commitment to LGBTQ+ rights worldwide.

The Meaning of Pride Marches

Pride marches are more than just celebrations—they are powerful statements of visibility, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equal rights. Originating from the Stonewall Riots of 1969 in New York, Pride has since become an annual global movement advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, legal protections, and societal acceptance. In many countries, Pride events serve as both festivals of love and identity and as platforms for activism, highlighting the progress made and the challenges that remain.

Pride in Caracas – A Growing Movement

The LGBTQ+ movement in Venezuela has faced unique challenges, including legal inequalities, societal stigma, and political instability. However, in recent years, Caracas Pride has grown, with increasing participation from civil society, activists, international organisations, and diplomatic missions.

This year’s march was particularly vibrant, bringing together people of all backgrounds, waving rainbow flags, singing, dancing, and spreading messages of love, unity, and acceptance. The support from organisations like the EU Delegation added an important international solidarity element, reinforcing the idea that human rights are universal.

Unexpected Connections – Poland in Caracas

One of the most memorable moments of the day was meeting a group of Venezuelans proudly wearing T-shirts with “Poland” written on them. Naturally curious, we approached them, only to discover that they had studied at the University of Warsaw years ago! It was a wonderful exchange—talking about their experiences in Poland, Venezuelan-Polish connections, and how global education brings people together.

A Day of Joy and Meaning

The Caracas Pride March 2024 was a truly uplifting experience—a day of solidarity, culture, and shared humanity. Seeing so many people come together, despite challenges, to celebrate love and diversity, reinforced the importance of supporting and advocating for LGBTQ+ rights everywhere.

At the end of June 2024, I travelled to Panama City for a series of meetings with colleagues at the regional office, focusing on the humanitarian situation in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). These discussions covered a range of pressing challenges affecting the region, particularly in relation to forced displacement, migration, and ongoing humanitarian crises.

Humanitarian Challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean

The LAC region faces an array of humanitarian concerns, with issues ranging from political instability and natural disasters to migration crises and economic hardship. Some of the key themes discussed during the meetings included:

Forced Displacement and Migration

One of the most urgent humanitarian challenges in LAC is the large-scale displacement of people, driven by violence, economic collapse, and climate-related disasters.
• Venezuelan Crisis – With over 7.7 million Venezuelans having left their country in search of stability, this remains one of the largest displacement crises in the world. Neighbouring countries like Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil continue to receive hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants, straining their social services and economies.
• Haitian Migration – Haiti’s ongoing political turmoil, gang violence, and economic instability have forced thousands to flee, often embarking on dangerous migration routes through the Darien Gap or heading toward the Dominican Republic, the United States, or South America.
• The Darien Gap Crisis – The dangerous jungle crossing between Colombia and Panama has become a key migration route for people from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba, and beyond, seeking to reach North America. Migrants face extreme dangers, including natural hazards, criminal gangs, and human trafficking.

Climate Change and Natural Disasters

LAC is highly vulnerable to hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and droughts, often causing mass displacement and economic devastation.
• Hurricanes in the Caribbean – Countries like Honduras, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic face regular hurricane seasons, which displace communities and destroy livelihoods.
• Droughts in the Gran Chaco – Indigenous communities in Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay are suffering from prolonged droughts, which impact food security and access to water.

Humanitarian Needs and Response

International and regional organisations continue to provide aid, strengthen resilience, and improve disaster preparedness, but challenges remain. The focus is increasingly on:
• Supporting host communities that receive large numbers of migrants.
• Improving access to basic services, including healthcare, education, and employment opportunities for displaced people.
• Strengthening humanitarian coordination among governments, NGOs, and international organisations.

Evenings in Casco Viejo – A Familiar Place

Beyond the meetings, it was great to catch up with friends and take evening walks through Casco Viejo. The charming colonial quarter of Panama City never fails to impress with its cobbled streets, colourful buildings, and lively atmosphere. Sitting in a small café, watching the sun set over the Pacific, was the perfect way to reflect on the ongoing challenges of the region—and the importance of continued humanitarian efforts.

In June 2024, on my way back from Poland to Caracas, I decided to extend my layover in Istanbul and spend a weekend getting to know this incredible city. With two nights in the city, it was the perfect opportunity to immerse myself in its rich history, diverse culture, and vibrant streets.

Arrival in Istanbul – First Impressions

Landing at Istanbul Airport, one of the most modern and impressive in the world, was an experience in itself. Everything about the airport felt efficient and grand, reflecting Turkey’s ambition as a major global hub. After a smooth arrival process, I took a taxi to the hotel in the city centre, eager to start my exploration.

Meeting My Guide, Omar – A Local Perspective

I had arranged guided tours in advance, and I was lucky to be accompanied by Omar, an exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate guide. His love for Istanbul was contagious, and he shared fascinating stories and historical insights that made the city come alive.

Sultanahmet – The Heart of Istanbul’s History

No visit to Istanbul is complete without exploring Sultanahmet, the historic district filled with some of the world’s most iconic landmarks. Walking through its ancient streets, I felt the weight of centuries of history, where Byzantine emperors, Ottoman sultans, and modern Turks have all left their mark.
• Hagia Sophia – A Monument of Time
Standing before the Hagia Sophia, one of the most remarkable buildings in the world, was awe-inspiring. Originally built as a Byzantine cathedral in 537 AD, it later became an Ottoman mosque, a museum, and now once again a functioning mosque. The sheer scale of its massive dome, the intricate mosaics, and the mix of Christian and Islamic influences made it a perfect symbol of Istanbul’s layered history.
• Blue Mosque – An Architectural Marvel
Just a short walk from Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) is one of Istanbul’s most famous sights. With its six towering minarets, elegant domes, and blue Iznik tiles inside, it was truly a sight to behold. Standing inside, surrounded by stunning Islamic calligraphy and geometric patterns, was a moment of tranquillity amidst the city’s energy.
• Topkapı Palace – The Home of Ottoman Sultans
Visiting Topkapı Palace, the former residence of Ottoman sultans, was like stepping into the world of palace intrigue, grandeur, and power. Walking through its lavish courtyards, ornate chambers, and the Harem section, I could imagine the sultans ruling over an empire that stretched across three continents. The views over the Bosphorus from the palace gardens were spectacular.

A Stroll Through the Grand Bazaar – A Feast for the Senses

The Grand Bazaar is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, and stepping inside felt like entering a labyrinth of colours, sounds, and scents. The narrow alleys were packed with stalls selling handwoven carpets, glittering jewellery, fragrant spices, and Turkish delights. Bargaining with the shopkeepers was part of the fun, and the atmosphere was truly electric.

Bosphorus Cruise – Where Continents Meet

One of the most memorable experiences was taking a boat cruise on the Bosphorus, the strait that divides Europe and Asia. Sailing past Ottoman palaces, wooden mansions, and modern skyscrapers, I saw how Istanbul connects the past and the present, the East and the West. Watching the sunset over the water while sipping Turkish tea was the perfect way to end the day.

A Weekend to Remember

Istanbul is a city that never stops surprising. From its ancient monuments to its bustling bazaars, from the serene Bosphorus to the chaotic yet charming streets, every moment felt like a discovery. Thanks to Omar’s insightful guidance, I gained a deeper appreciation of the city’s history and culture.

As I boarded my flight to Caracas, I knew that Istanbul is a place I will always want to return to. There is still so much to explore, and this weekend was just the beginning.

After returning from Japan to Warsaw (end of May 2024), the final part of my spring holiday began. I first spent time at home in Nowy Sącz, enjoying the company of family and friends and revisiting some of the nearby towns. I took trips to Rytro, Żegiestów, and Muszyna, admiring the landscapes and stopping at Rytro’s Ecological Park, a wonderful initiative funded by a friend.

A Road Trip to Lower Silesia – Exploring the Wałbrzych Region

Together with Mum, her friend Pani Kurzejowa, and my niece Zosia, we embarked on a long road trip to western Poland, specifically the Wałbrzych area. Along the way, we made stops, including one in Zabierzów, before arriving in Walim, a peaceful village near Wałbrzych, where we stayed in a cosy and quiet hotel.

Over the next days, we explored the region’s spa towns and historic sites, including Jedlina-Zdrój and Szczawno-Zdrój. Szczawno-Zdrój particularly stood out with its elegant spa buildings, historic promenades, and relaxing atmosphere. But the highlight of the trip was undoubtedly our visit to Książ Castle.

Książ Castle – A Place of History, Mystery, and Grandeur

Perched on a rocky hill and surrounded by lush forests, Książ Castle is one of the most magnificent castles in Poland. Its rich history, stretching back to the 13th century, makes it one of the country’s most intriguing landmarks.
• The castle’s architecture is a blend of Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance styles, with grand halls, ornate staircases, and hidden chambers that tell the story of centuries of rulers, wars, and secrets.
• One of the most fascinating aspects is the castle’s connection to Project Riese, a mysterious Nazi-era underground complex. While the full purpose of the tunnels beneath Książ remains unknown, they add a layer of intrigue to the site.
• The tourist experience was exceptionally well-organised, with audio guides, visual presentations, and storytelling that truly brought the castle’s history to life.
• Outside, the castle gardens were breathtaking, carefully maintained with terraces overlooking the surrounding forests. We spent time wandering through the gardens, taking in the peaceful atmosphere.

After Książ, we also visited the Palmarnia (Palm House), which was surprisingly interesting, offering an exotic escape with lush greenery and rare plants.

Wrocław – A City That Stole Our Hearts

The next day, we set off for a full-day trip to Wrocław, a city that completely enchanted us. Known as the “Venice of Poland”, Wrocław is famous for its islands, bridges, and stunning old town.
• The Market Square (Rynek) was absolutely stunning, surrounded by colourful townhouses and dominated by the Gothic-style Old Town Hall. The energy of the square, with street performers, lively cafés, and a mix of locals and tourists, made it a joy to explore.
• We couldn’t help but search for Wrocław’s famous dwarfs—small bronze statues scattered across the city, each with its own quirky design and story.
• Walking along the Odra River, we crossed to Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island), the oldest part of the city. The majestic Wrocław Cathedral, with its twin towers and impressive interior, was a highlight.
• One of the most unique experiences was visiting the Centennial Hall, a UNESCO-listed modernist structure, and walking through the Japanese Garden nearby.

After a long day of exploring, we returned to Walim, exhausted but happy.

Back to Nowy Sącz – Preparing for the Next Adventure

Soon, it was time to return to Nowy Sącz, where the final days of my holiday in Poland were spent packing and preparing for the next chapter—returning to Caracas, once again via Istanbul.

At the end of May 2024, the long-awaited trip to Japan finally began. From the moment we boarded the plane from Warsaw to Tokyo, the excitement was undeniable. Watching the flight path on the screen, crossing over Asia, and realising that soon we would be landing in a country that was completely new for both of us added to the thrill.

Arrival in Tokyo – First Impressions

We arrived at Narita Airport at night, exhausted but eager to experience the vibrancy of Tokyo. The long ride into the city gave us our first glimpses of the dazzling lights and towering skyscrapers. Our hotel choice wasn’t perfect, but it didn’t matter—we were too excited about the adventure ahead.

Tokyo is a city of contrasts—a place where ancient traditions exist side by side with ultramodern technology. Over the next few days, we explored different parts of the city, from the historic streets of Asakusa to the futuristic skyline of Shinjuku and Shibuya.
• Meeting Atsuko – A Special Reunion
One of the highlights was meeting my dear Japanese friend, Atsuko, whom I first met years ago in South Sudan. Now working for UNHCR in Tokyo, she generously invited us to experience authentic Japanese cuisine, introducing us to an array of dishes, including fresh sushi. She also brought thoughtful souvenirs for my mum, which made the evening even more special.
• A River Cruise and the Skytree
One of the most memorable experiences was taking a cruise along the river, admiring the mix of modern and traditional architecture from the water. Later, we visited the Tokyo Skytree, one of the tallest towers in the world, which offered panoramic views of the endless Tokyo skyline.

A Day Trip to Mount Fuji and Hakone

Leaving the fast-paced city behind, we took a bus journey to Mount Fuji, stopping in Narusawa to take in the breathtaking view of Japan’s most famous peak. The sight of Fuji’s symmetrical snow-capped cone was truly awe-inspiring, a symbol of Japan’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

From there, we continued to Hakone, an area known for its hot springs and stunning landscapes. Riding the Hakone Ropeway, we had an incredible view of Lake Ashi, and the famous torii gate standing in the water, creating a picture-perfect scene. The mix of mountains, forests, and volcanic activity made Hakone a fascinating contrast to Tokyo’s urban sprawl.

Riding the Shinkansen to Kobe

Another unforgettable part of the trip was riding the legendary Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kobe. The sheer speed of the train was an experience in itself, as we passed through some of Japan’s most famous cities—Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Osaka—in what felt like no time at all.

Kobe turned out to be a delightful surprise. The city has a unique blend of Japanese and international influences, which is evident in places like Kobe’s Chinatown, one of the most famous in Japan. Walking through the bustling streets lined with colourful lanterns and street food vendors, we sampled delicious dumplings, bao buns, and other Chinese delicacies. The city’s harbour area, with its scenic waterfront, was a great place to take in the fresh sea air and reflect on how diverse Japan’s cities can be.

The Return Journey – Flying Over Alaska

Soon, it was time to board our flight back to Warsaw, but the surprises weren’t over yet. Due to sanctions preventing European airlines from flying over Russia, our plane took an alternative northern route, passing around the Kamchatka Peninsula and flying over Alaska! Seeing the vast, untouched landscapes of snow-covered mountains and frozen coastlines from above was an unexpected but thrilling way to end the trip.

A Journey to Remember

Japan was everything we had hoped for and more. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serenity of Mount Fuji, from the modern efficiency of the Shinkansen to the historical charm of Kobe, every moment felt special and unforgettable. More than anything, sharing this adventure with Mum made it truly priceless.

In May 2024, I set off for a longer holiday in Europe, planning to spend quality time with Mum and family. The journey began with an exciting stopover in Istanbul, before continuing to Poland, where I would prepare for our next big adventure—a trip to Japan with Mum.

Istanbul – A City Between Continents

Travelling from Caracas to Kraków via Istanbul was an opportunity to enjoy a brief but fascinating stay in one of the world’s most historically rich and dynamic cities. Even during a short visit, Istanbul’s unique blend of East and West was immediately captivating. Walking through the bustling streets, passing ancient mosques, grand palaces, and lively bazaars, there was an overwhelming sense of the city’s centuries-old history.
• The sight of the Bosphorus at sunset was breathtaking, with ferries crossing between Europe and Asia, symbolising Istanbul’s dual identity.
• I made sure to visit the Hagia Sophia, standing in awe of its immense Byzantine architecture, while the Blue Mosque impressed with its intricate tilework and grandeur.
• The Grand Bazaar, as always, was a feast for the senses—spices, carpets, ceramics, and the unmistakable aroma of Turkish coffee filling the air.

Nowy Sącz and Stary Sącz – Time at Home

After arriving in Kraków, I travelled to Nowy Sącz and Stary Sącz, enjoying the familiar comforts of home. This time was special, as it involved preparing for the upcoming trip to Japan with Mum. Between errands, I took moments to visit my favourite spots, appreciating the beautiful landscapes of the region and spending precious time with family.

A Wonderful Surprise in Warsaw – Reunion with Lucy

Before heading to Tokyo, a wonderful surprise awaited me in Warsaw Airport—a chance meeting with Lucy, my dear Australian friend. Our friendship goes back to years ago in Ethiopia, where we first met while working in humanitarian response. At the time of our meeting in Warsaw, Lucy was deeply involved in the Ukraine response, dedicating her efforts to supporting those affected by the crisis.

Seeing Lucy again was unexpected and incredibly special. She has always been one of the most inspiring people I know—her dedication, kindness, and humour make every conversation with her meaningful. Despite both of us being constantly on the move, we always manage to pick up right where we left off, as if no time had passed.

Between sharing updates about our respective missions and travels, we reminisced about the intensity of our work in Ethiopia, the challenges of humanitarian response, and, of course, the joys of seeing the world through our unique experiences. It was the perfect way to mark the beginning of another exciting journey, as soon after, I found myself boarding the plane with Mum, bound for Japan.

At the end of March 2024, I travelled to Brussels to participate in the European Humanitarian Forum (EHF), an annual event that brings together humanitarian organisations, policymakers, donors, and experts to discuss the most pressing global humanitarian challenges. The forum, organised by the European Commission and its humanitarian branch, ECHO, serves as a platform for debate, collaboration, and policy-shaping. This year’s discussions covered a wide range of topics, with a particular focus on Latin America and Venezuela, allowing for valuable exchanges on how to better respond to humanitarian needs in the region.

While the forum was the main purpose of my trip, I was fortunate to have the weekend free, which gave me the opportunity to re-explore Luxembourg and take my first trip to Lille, France. I travelled between these cities by bus and train, making the journey both convenient and enjoyable.

Luxembourg – A Return to the Grand Duchy

Luxembourg is a small but fascinating country, known for its historic old town, modern financial district, and stunning landscapes. Even though I had visited before, I thoroughly enjoyed walking through the UNESCO-listed Old Town, admiring the impressive Bock Casemates, and strolling along the scenic Chemin de la Corniche, often called “Europe’s most beautiful balcony.” The city’s mix of medieval fortifications, elegant squares, and modern institutions makes it a unique blend of history and contemporary European influence.

Lille – A Hidden Gem in Northern France

While I had been to many places in France, this was my first time in Lille, and I was truly charmed by the city. Located near the Belgian border, Lille is often overlooked compared to Paris or Lyon, but it has a distinct identity, shaped by Flemish, French, and industrial influences.

Exploring Lille’s Historic Centre

The heart of the city is the Vieux-Lille (Old Lille) district, a beautiful area filled with narrow cobblestone streets, pastel-coloured houses, and Flemish-style architecture. Walking through the Grand Place, the main square, I was struck by the ornate façades of historic buildings, including the Vieille Bourse (Old Stock Exchange), a 17th-century masterpiece with an inner courtyard where bookstalls and chess players gather.

A City of Culture and Energy

Lille is a university city, which means it has a vibrant atmosphere, with cafés, street performances, and lively markets adding to its appeal. I took time to visit the Palais des Beaux-Arts, one of France’s largest art museums, where I admired works by Rubens, Van Dyck, and Delacroix. The city also has a rich industrial past, and areas like Le Tripostal, a former mail-sorting centre turned into an exhibition space, show how Lille has reinvented itself as a cultural hub.

Lille’s Flemish Influence

Unlike other French cities, Lille has a strong Flemish heritage, evident in its architecture and cuisine. I couldn’t leave without trying the local speciality, carbonnade flamande, a delicious beef stew slow-cooked in beer—perfect for the cool spring weather. Another must-try was the Maroilles cheese tart, a regional dish known for its strong flavour.

A Trip of Contrasts and Discoveries

From the formal discussions in Brussels to the medieval charm of Luxembourg and the unexpected beauty of Lille, this trip was filled with new experiences and familiar places. The European Humanitarian Forum provided an opportunity to engage in important discussions, while my weekend explorations allowed me to appreciate the cultural richness of this corner of Europe. Lille, in particular, stood out as a city I would love to return to, with its unique mix of French and Flemish heritage, artistic spirit, and warm atmosphere.

In March and April 2024, work took me to Panama City and then to Washington, D.C., where I participated in meetings related to the humanitarian situation in Venezuela. While the discussions in D.C. were important and insightful, what made this trip even more special was that it was my first time in the U.S. capital. Since the meetings were scheduled toward the end of the week, I extended my stay for a day, giving myself the chance to explore Washington on foot.

Washington, D.C. – A City of History and Power

Washington, D.C., carries a unique symbolism, not only as the political heart of the United States but also as a city filled with monuments, museums, and landmarks that tell the story of both America’s history and global influence. Walking through the streets, I could feel the weight of decisions made here—decisions that shape not only the U.S. but often the world.

The National Mall – A Walk Through History

One of the most fascinating parts of D.C. was walking the length of the National Mall, an open green space that stretches from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. The Mall is lined with some of the most iconic landmarks in the country, and exploring it on foot was both tiring and exhilarating.
• The Washington Monument was impossible to miss—the tall obelisk towering over the Mall stood as a tribute to George Washington, the first U.S. president. Seeing it up close, with its simple yet commanding presence, was an experience in itself.
• The Lincoln Memorial was even more impressive than I had imagined. Sitting at the top of grand marble steps, the statue of Abraham Lincoln gazes out over the Reflecting Pool, creating a powerful and almost solemn atmosphere. Standing there, I couldn’t help but think of the countless historical moments that had unfolded in this very spot—including Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
• The Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Memorial were deeply moving. The long black granite wall of the Vietnam Memorial, engraved with thousands of names, was particularly striking—simple yet filled with so much meaning and remembrance.

The U.S. Capitol and the White House

No visit to Washington, D.C. is complete without seeing the U.S. Capitol and the White House. The Capitol, with its massive dome and columns, is the symbol of the U.S. Congress and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. Even from the outside, it felt like being at the center of political power.

The White House, while smaller than I had expected in person, still had an undeniable aura of significance. Seeing it through the gates of Pennsylvania Avenue, I thought about how many global decisions and historical moments had taken place inside.

Smithsonian Museums – A Treasure Trove of Knowledge

Washington, D.C. is home to the Smithsonian Institution, a collection of world-class museums that are all free to enter. With only one free day, I couldn’t visit them all, but I did make it to a few highlights:
• The National Air and Space Museum, where I saw actual spacecraft, historic airplanes, and exhibits on the history of flight and space exploration. Seeing the Apollo Lunar Module up close was unforgettable!
• The National Museum of American History, where exhibits ranged from Abraham Lincoln’s hat to the original Star-Spangled Banner—a piece of history that inspired the U.S. national anthem.
• The National Gallery of Art, which houses an incredible collection of European and American masterpieces, including works by da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh.

Georgetown – A Different Side of Washington

After a long day of walking through historic monuments and museums, I made my way to Georgetown, one of D.C.’s oldest neighbourhoods. With its charming cobblestone streets, historic row houses, and lively waterfront, Georgetown felt different from the rest of the city—more relaxed, more European. Strolling along the Potomac River, watching rowers on the water, and enjoying a quiet coffee in a historic café made for a perfect end to the day.

Back to Panama – Meetings and Friendships

After Washington, D.C., I returned to Panama City for more meetings. While work kept me busy, I also had time to reconnect with friends I had made during my years living there. Catching up with them reminded me just how much Panama had become a part of my life, and it was a pleasure to be back, even if just for a short while.

An Unforgettable Journey

The combination of professional engagements and exploration made this trip particularly special. Washington, D.C., with its monuments, museums, and historic weight, left a lasting impression, while returning to Panama felt like a homecoming of sorts. From serious meetings to long walks through history, this was a trip that balanced work, discovery, and personal connections perfectly.

At the beginning of January 2024, Leo and I took a short but incredible break to Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. The trip was special for many reasons, but especially because it was Leo’s first time on a plane! Watching his excitement as we took off from Caracas to Bogotá and then changed for our flight to Cartagena made the journey even more memorable.

A Walk Through History – Cartagena’s Old Town

Cartagena is a city that breathes history. As soon as we arrived, we were welcomed by its colourful streets, cobbled alleys, and well-preserved colonial architecture. Walking through the Old Town felt like stepping back in time, with Spanish-era balconies overflowing with flowers, churches standing tall over bustling plazas, and the sound of street musicians filling the air.

The Walled City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is at the heart of Cartagena’s charm. The thick stone walls that once protected the city from pirate attacks still surround the historic centre, offering incredible views of the Caribbean Sea from Baluarte de Santo Domingo and San Felipe de Barajas Castle. The fortress, one of the most impressive in South America, stands as a reminder of Cartagena’s importance as a colonial stronghold.

We spent hours wandering through the Plaza de los Coches, where horse-drawn carriages still roll by, and exploring the Plaza Santo Domingo, where the famous “Gertrudis” sculpture by Fernando Botero sits, symbolising good luck for those who touch it. The lively Getsemaní neighbourhood, once overlooked, has now become one of Cartagena’s most artistic and vibrant districts, filled with murals, small cafés, and street performers.

Relaxing by the Sea – Beaches and Modern Cartagena

Cartagena isn’t just about history—it’s also about relaxation and the Caribbean lifestyle. We enjoyed our hotel’s swimming pool, soaking in the tropical sunshine, and made time for Cartagena’s beaches. While the city’s urban beaches might not be the most spectacular in the Caribbean, the warm waters and lively atmosphere made for a fun experience.

Beyond the Old Town, Cartagena has a modern side. We explored the Bocagrande district, with its high-rise hotels, shopping centres, and restaurants offering stunning sea views. The contrast between the colonial charm of the Old Town and the sleek skyline of modern Cartagena made the city even more fascinating.

Venturing into Nature – La Boquilla and the Mangroves

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting La Boquilla, a small fishing village just outside Cartagena. Unlike the tourist-filled streets of the Old Town, La Boquilla had a more local, relaxed vibe, with small huts lining the shore and fishermen pulling in their daily catch.

Here, we embarked on a mangrove forest tour, one of the most unique natural experiences in the region. Mangroves are coastal trees that grow in saltwater, with intertwined roots that create a dense network above the water. These ecosystems are vital for marine life, acting as natural nurseries for fish and crabs while also protecting the coastline from erosion.

Gliding through the narrow water channels of the mangrove forest in a small wooden canoe, we were surrounded by tunnels of green, where birds, crabs, and even small fish moved through the roots of the trees. The peacefulness of the mangrove labyrinth was a stark contrast to the lively streets of Cartagena, offering a moment of pure tranquillity.

An Unforgettable Experience

From Leo’s first flight to exploring the history, culture, and natural beauty of Cartagena, this trip was nothing short of amazing. It was a perfect mix of relaxation, discovery, and adventure, making it a fantastic way to start 2024.

In 2024, life in Venezuela continued to be a mix of humanitarian work, discovering new places, and experiencing the rich culture of the country. The more time spent here, the more the country revealed its complexities, challenges, and undeniable beauty. Each trip brought a new perspective, whether in the bustling cities, the quiet coastal towns, or the historical centres filled with echoes of the past.

Life in Caracas – The Heartbeat of Venezuela

Most of the year was spent in Caracas, a city that never stands still. Life here is fast-paced, with its streets filled with markets, historic plazas, and modern developments sitting side by side. The Ávila mountain range towers over the city, offering a constant reminder of how nature and urban life intertwine in Venezuela. Between work, daily life in La Castellana, and moments spent in Altamira and El Hatillo, the city continued to be both familiar and surprising.

Maiquetía – The First Glimpse of the Coast

Many trips began or ended in Maiquetía, the coastal town near Simón Bolívar International Airport. Perched on the edge of the Caribbean Sea, it was a place of transitions—the first breath of ocean air after leaving the capital or the last stop before a new journey.

Naiguatá – A Seaside Retreat

Further along the coast, Naiguatá offered an escape from the rush of Caracas. A small town wedged between the mountains and the sea, it was a place where local traditions remained strong. The beaches, though often quiet, held a charm that made every visit feel special.

El Guapo – Rural Beauty and Simplicity

Unlike the more well-known destinations, El Guapo was a step into a slower, more rural Venezuela. The landscapes were green and unspoiled, and life moved at a gentler pace. It was the kind of place that reminded why Venezuela is so unique—beyond the big cities, there are places where time seems to stretch and nature dominates.

Barcelona – History and Colour

The city of Barcelona, one of Venezuela’s oldest, was a chance to walk through cobblestone streets, past colonial-era churches, and into bustling markets where locals gathered for fresh produce and handmade goods. The colourful buildings and historic charm made it one of the most fascinating stops of the year.

Guanta – A Coastal Stop Before the Islands

Not far from Barcelona, the coastal town of Guanta was a relaxed stop along the way. The waterfront, dotted with small fishing boats, gave it a slower rhythm than the larger cities. It was a place often used as a gateway to the Caribbean, but it had a charm of its own.

Cumaná – Where History Meets the Sea

Spending time in Cumaná, the oldest European-founded city in South America, was like stepping into a different era. The colonial architecture, the fortresses, and the ocean views made it a blend of history and natural beauty. Every walk through the city’s streets was a reminder of how much history had unfolded here.

La Guaira – Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

Close to Caracas but with a completely different atmosphere, La Guaira was always full of energy. A port city with a dramatic backdrop of towering mountains and the Caribbean coastline, it was a place of commerce, culture, and movement. It was never quiet, but that was part of its charm.

A Year of New Experiences and Familiar Places

Each trip in 2024 added another layer to the understanding of Venezuela. The contrast between urban life in Caracas, the coastal towns, and the historical cities painted a fuller picture of the country’s richness and diversity. Whether it was through work, exploring, or simply daily life, Venezuela continued to fascinate, challenge, and inspire every single day.

December 2023 was another wonderful time spent in Portugal, enjoying both my home in Óbidos and some of my favourite places nearby. Before heading to Dubrovnik for my Balkan trip, I had a chance to reconnect with familiar sights in Lisbon, Caldas da Rainha, Foz do Arelho, and Óbidos. The quiet winter season made these places even more charming, with fewer crowds and a peaceful, festive atmosphere.

Welcoming Taheeni to Portugal

After returning from the Balkans, I had the absolute pleasure of hosting my dear friend Taheeni, my Austrian friend with whom I used to work in Bangkok for ECHO. It was her first time in Portugal, and I was excited to introduce her to the country. From the moment she arrived, we had a fantastic time—chatting, catching up, and reminiscing about our time in Thailand while exploring the beauty of Portugal together.

Exploring the Silver Coast

We started our trip by exploring Óbidos, where I could show Taheeni my Portuguese home. The medieval charm of Óbidos never fails to impress, with its cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and the impressive castle walls. We strolled through the narrow alleyways, stopping at small bookshops, artisan stores, and of course, enjoying the famous Ginjinha de Óbidos.

From there, we took a trip to Foz do Arelho, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Óbidos Lagoon. Even in December, the sea breeze was refreshing, and the dramatic waves crashing on the shore made for an incredible sight.

We continued to Praia do Rei, a beautiful and somewhat wild beach near Ferrel. The coastal scenery here was breathtaking, with endless dunes and rugged cliffs overlooking the ocean. In Peniche, we admired the fishing port and the spectacular Berlenga Islands in the distance.

Venturing Further – Coimbra and Nazaré

One of the highlights was our visit to Coimbra, the historic university city. Coimbra’s old-world charm is undeniable, and we spent the day wandering through the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in Europe, with its stunning Joanina Library. The city’s hilly streets, river views, and historic atmosphere made it a great addition to our journey.

Later, we visited Nazaré, famous for its record-breaking waves and traditional fishing culture. The views from Sítio were incredible, overlooking the vast Atlantic Ocean, and we took time to explore the local seafood restaurants, where we enjoyed delicious fresh fish dishes.

A Final Farewell in Lisbon

Our time together flew by, and soon it was time for Taheeni to return to Vienna and for me to fly back to Caracas. Before parting ways, we spent our last moments in Lisbon, wandering through the city’s historic streets, revisiting Praça do Comércio, and taking in the charm of the Portuguese capital one last time.

It was an amazing visit, and I was so happy to have shared Portugal with Taheeni—a country I love so much. The experience was even more special because of the friendship and memories we created together.

At the end of November and beginning of December 2023, I set off on a Balkan adventure, making the most of my holiday in Europe. After transferring from Lisbon to Dubrovnik via Frankfurt and Zagreb, I arrived in the breathtaking coastal city of Dubrovnik, where I would spend the next few days exploring its rich history, stunning landscapes, and the pre-Christmas atmosphere.
 
Dubrovnik – The Pearl of the Adriatic
 
Dubrovnik is a city that impresses at first sight. Nestled along the Adriatic Sea, its medieval walls, red-tiled rooftops, and marble streets exude an almost timeless charm. Staying in a beautiful apart-hotel in the centre of the city made it easy to fully immerse myself in its unique atmosphere.
 
Walking through the Old Town, I admired the Baroque and Gothic architecture, the narrow alleyways, and the historic churches that make Dubrovnik so special. The Stradun, the city’s main street, was particularly beautiful, with its polished stone reflecting the warm glow of streetlights in the evening. The early December air was crisp, but the city was alive with a festive atmosphere, as the first Christmas decorations began appearing in the squares and shops.
 
A highlight was walking along the ancient city walls, which offered breathtaking views of the Adriatic and the surrounding islands. The contrast between the deep blue sea and the warm stone of Dubrovnik’s fortifications was stunning. From Lovrijenac Fortress, I had a spectacular view of the city, imagining the centuries of history that unfolded in this very spot.
 
Brijesta and the Border with Bosnia and Herzegovina
 
One of my first excursions from Dubrovnik took me to Brijesta, a peaceful coastal area known for its scenic views and quiet atmosphere. From there, I crossed into Bosnia and Herzegovina via Čapljina, a small town near the Neretva River.
 
Kravice Waterfalls – A Hidden Natural Wonder
 
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, I visited the Kravice Waterfalls, one of the country’s most breathtaking natural sights. Nestled in a dense forest, the waterfalls cascade down limestone cliffs, creating a stunning turquoise pool. Even in the cooler months, the place had a magical beauty, and the sound of rushing water was incredibly soothing. It was a reminder of the untamed beauty of the Balkans.
 
Mostar – Where East Meets West
 
Mostar is a city that feels like a bridge between two worlds—a place where Ottoman and European influences merge into something truly unique. Walking through its historic streets, I was struck by the contrast between old and new, a city that has endured so much history yet continues to thrive.
 
The Stari Most (Old Bridge), an iconic Ottoman-era structure spanning the Neretva River, was the highlight of my visit. This bridge, which was destroyed during the war and later rebuilt, symbolises resilience and reconciliation. Watching the reflection of the bridge in the emerald-green waters below was mesmerising.
 
The Old Bazaar, with its cobblestone paths and market stalls, was a delight to explore. I wandered through shops selling traditional crafts, handwoven carpets, and Bosnian coffee sets. The influence of the Ottoman Empire was visible everywhere, from the mosques to the aroma of freshly brewed Bosnian coffee drifting through the streets.
 
Počitelj – A Medieval Gem
 
On my way back to Dubrovnik, I passed through Počitelj, a small medieval village perched on a hillside. The village is known for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture, including the impressive fortress and a stunning 16th-century mosque. Walking through Počitelj felt like stepping into a fairy tale, with its stone houses blending into the rocky landscape.
 
Ston and the Sunset in Podimoć
 
Back in Croatia, I visited Ston, a town famous for its imposing medieval walls and oyster farms. The Ston Walls, often called the “European Great Wall,” stretch for over 5 kilometres, making them one of the longest fortifications in Europe.
 
Later, I witnessed a breathtaking sunset in Podimoć, where the sky turned shades of orange and pink, reflecting beautifully over the landscape.
 
Crossing into Montenegro – Perast and Kotor
 
Another highlight of my trip was crossing the Karasovići border into Montenegro, a country known for its stunning coastal landscapes.
• Perast was my first stop, a quiet, picturesque town with Venetian-style buildings and breathtaking sea views. The town felt almost frozen in time, and its charm lay in its elegant simplicity. From Perast, I could see the famous Our Lady of the Rocks, a small island church in the Bay of Kotor, said to have been built by sailors who placed a rock in the water every time they returned from a voyage.
• Kotor – The Jewel of Montenegro
Kotor, with its dramatic setting between the mountains and the sea, was simply breathtaking. The Old Town is a labyrinth of stone streets, hidden squares, and ancient churches, all surrounded by impressive fortifications. As I climbed up the city walls, I was rewarded with one of the most spectacular views I had ever seen—the entire Bay of Kotor, stretching out beneath me.
Kotor has a deep maritime history, and its blend of Venetian, Byzantine, and Slavic influences makes it one of the most unique places in the Adriatic region. I spent time wandering through its quaint streets, stopping at charming cafes, and simply soaking in the city’s timeless beauty.
 
A Trip to Remember
 
After an incredible few days of history, nature, and culture, I transferred back to Lisbon via Vienna, reflecting on what an amazing experience this trip had been. The Balkans left a deep impression on me—their rich history, stunning landscapes, and warm people made this journey one to remember.
From the medieval walls of Dubrovnik to the mystical bridges of Mostar, and the hidden bays of Kotor, every place had its own story to tell, and I was grateful to have been a part of it, even if just for a few days.

On 7th and 8th October 2023, Leo and I decided to take a weekend trip to Colonia Tovar, a charming town nestled in the mountains about a few hours from Caracas. We rented a car to make the drive more convenient and were excited to explore this unique place, which is famous for its German heritage and beautiful natural surroundings.

The German Influence in Colonia Tovar

One of the most fascinating aspects of Colonia Tovar is its German influence. Founded in the 19th century by German settlers, the town has retained many of its traditional German customs and architecture. As soon as we entered the town, it felt like we had been transported to a small German village, with half-timbered houses, flower-filled balconies, and streets lined with quaint shops selling German-inspired goods.

The German influence is most noticeable in the local architecture, which features steep roofs, wooden beams, and the distinctive charm of Bavarian-style homes. The town also celebrates its heritage through festivals, such as the annual Oktoberfest, where visitors can enjoy German food, beer, and traditional folk music. It was like walking through a piece of Germany in the heart of Venezuela.

Exploring Colonia Tovar’s Natural Beauty

After settling into our lovely hotel, we set off to explore the natural beauty around Colonia Tovar. The area is surrounded by lush green mountains, making it a perfect spot for hiking and nature walks. We visited the Tree House, a unique attraction set high in the trees, offering amazing views of the surrounding forest and mountain scenery.

The area is also home to several waterfalls, which we enjoyed discovering during our hike. The serene and peaceful environment was a stark contrast to the bustle of Caracas, and it was refreshing to spend time immersed in such natural beauty.

Agriculture in Colonia Tovar

Another notable feature of Colonia Tovar is its agriculture. The town is well-known for producing a variety of crops, particularly strawberries, potatoes, and vegetables, thanks to the fertile soil and favourable climate of the surrounding Andean mountains. As we walked around, we could see fields of strawberries being harvested and locally grown produce being sold at the town’s markets.

The German settlers brought with them a strong tradition of farming and gardening, which has remained a key part of Colonia Tovar’s economy and culture. It’s said that the town’s agriculture is one of the best in Venezuela, and we could certainly see why, as everything we tried—from fresh fruit to homemade chocolates—was exceptional.

Visiting the Chocolate Factory

One of the highlights of our visit was stopping by the local chocolate factory. Colonia Tovar is famous for producing fine chocolates, made from high-quality cocoa beans grown in the region. We had the opportunity to tour the factory, where we learned about the chocolate-making process, from the harvest of the cocoa to the final product. After the tour, we enjoyed a tasting session and tried some of the best chocolate we’ve ever had—rich, smooth, and infused with local flavours.

A Relaxing Evening in Colonia Tovar

To round off our wonderful weekend, we spent an evening in a local pub, where we enjoyed live music and good company. The pub had a cosy, welcoming atmosphere, and the combination of German-inspired beers, delicious food, and the lively music made for a perfect end to our trip. It was a great opportunity to relax and soak in the vibe of the town while enjoying the warmth and hospitality of the locals.

On 17 September 2023, together with Leo, we decided to spend the day exploring the natural beauty of Caracas with a hike in the stunning Ávila Hills. We took the teleférico (cable car) to reach the top, an iconic way to see the sprawling city below. The journey up was an adventure in itself, offering incredible panoramic views of Caracas and the surrounding landscape.

Ávila Hills – A Bird’s Eye View of Caracas

The Ávila Hills are one of the most prominent features of Caracas. Rising over 2,000 metres above the city, these hills are part of the Ávila National Park and are a popular escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. As we ascended in the cable car, we were treated to breathtaking views of Caracas, the Caribbean Sea, and the nearby mountains.

Once we reached the top, we took some time to admire the panoramic views. The city below appeared smaller, almost like a miniature, and the surrounding mountains were awe-inspiring. We visited the hotel on the hill, which offers stunning views of the area, before walking around to explore more of the natural beauty of the hills.

The area is full of wildlife and lush vegetation, and we enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, away from the noise of the city. The air was fresher, the nature was calming, and it felt like we had stepped into another world. We hiked through various nature trails, taking in the beauty of the landscape, which offered everything from tropical forests to rocky terrain.

El Recreo Parish – A Peaceful Stop

Our hike took us to El Recreo Parish, a neighbourhood at the foot of the hills. This area is known for its quaint charm and residential atmosphere, offering a peaceful escape from the busy centre of Caracas. As we walked through the area, we admired the local architecture and stopped for a moment to appreciate the local life.

San Antonio de Galipan – A Charming Village

From El Recreo, we made our way to San Antonio de Galipan, a small mountain village nestled in the Ávila mountains. The village is a hidden gem, known for its picturesque streets, colourful houses, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It felt like stepping back in time, with its old-world charm and rustic cobblestone paths.

The village is famous for its local produce, particularly fruit and cheese, and as we walked through the streets, we had the chance to visit local shops and chat with the villagers. The village’s peaceful atmosphere was contagious, and we could feel the slower pace of life here compared to the vibrant city below.

After exploring the village, we stopped for lunch at a charming local restaurant. The meal was delicious—traditional Venezuelan food, paired with a glass of local wine. It was the perfect way to relax after a long hike and enjoy the mountain air. We spent some time sitting in the village square, chatting and soaking in the surroundings.

A Wonderful Day

The day was both tiring and incredibly rewarding. Hiking in the Ávila Hills and visiting San Antonio de Galipan gave us a deeper connection to Venezuela’s natural beauty and mountain culture. It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time with Leo, and it also allowed us to experience a part of Caracas and its surrounding areas that many people miss. The tranquil atmosphere of San Antonio de Galipan was the perfect end to a truly memorable day.

The second half of 2023 marked a significant transition as I moved to Venezuela to take on my new role as ECHO’s Head of Office. The first few months were a time of learning, adjusting to my new responsibilities, getting to know my amazing colleagues, and making new friends. I was also excited to explore the country and get a feel for its diverse landscapes and rich culture.

Exploring Caracas – A City of Contrasts

Most of my time in Venezuela was spent in Caracas, the country’s bustling capital. Caracas is a city of contrasts—it is both vibrant and challenging, with a unique energy that is difficult to explain until you experience it. My flat is located in the neighbourhood of La Castellana, one of the more upscale areas of Caracas. From here, I could easily access key parts of the city, making it a convenient base for both work and exploration.

La Castellana is known for its tree-lined streets, modern buildings, and a somewhat more relaxed pace compared to other parts of the city. The area is also home to some of the city’s best restaurants, cafes, and local shops, which I enjoyed frequenting during my downtime. The views of the surrounding mountains from La Castellana were a constant reminder of how connected the city is to nature.

El Hatillo – A Charming Escape

A delightful area I visited in Caracas was El Hatillo, located on the southern outskirts of the city. This charming neighbourhood is a welcome break from the busy city life, with its cobblestone streets, colourful houses, and historic town square. El Hatillo retains an old-world charm, offering a glimpse into Caracas’s colonial past with its traditional architecture and quaint shops. It’s a peaceful retreat where locals and visitors alike can wander through the picturesque streets, visit artisanal markets, and enjoy the many cafes and restaurants that line the main square. The laid-back atmosphere and beautiful scenic views of the surrounding mountains make El Hatillo a perfect spot to relax and unwind after a busy day in the city.

Other Parts of Caracas

While I spent most of my time in the central areas of Caracas, I also had the chance to explore different parts of the city. I visited areas like Altamira, known for its bustling energy, wide avenues, and large shopping malls. I also ventured to El Hatillo, a charming, more laid-back town on the outskirts of the city with cobbled streets, colourful houses, and a historic town square. El Hatillo offered a peaceful escape from the frenetic pace of the city.

Another memorable experience was visiting Candelaria, one of the older, historic neighbourhoods in Caracas, where I wandered through narrow streets, admired the old colonial architecture, and experienced a more traditional side of the capital.

Exploring Other Parts of Venezuela

Beyond Caracas, I had the opportunity to visit several other regions in Venezuela for work. I travelled to San Fernando de Apure, Cunaviche, and Biruaca to visit various humanitarian projects that ECHO was supporting. These trips allowed me to see firsthand the challenges facing communities in the more remote parts of the country and understand the humanitarian needs on the ground.

For leisure, I also made time to explore the beautiful coastal areas of La Guaira, Macuto, and Caraballeda. These coastal towns offered beautiful beaches, seaside views, and a sense of tranquillity that was a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Caracas. It was wonderful to relax by the Caribbean Sea, enjoy the fresh air, and soak in the beauty of Venezuela’s coast.

A Special Friendship – Meeting Leo

One of the main pleasures and privileges of my time in Caracas was getting to know Leo, a young Venezuelan man from Merida, who had recently moved to Caracas in search of work. Leo is the cousin of Julio, a friend I had met in Panama. We thought it would be a good opportunity for Leo to work for me, helping out around the house. Little did I know, this would turn out to be one of the best decisions I made.

Leo quickly became more than just an assistant or housekeeper; he became a true friend. His sense of responsibility, kindness, and genuine care made him an invaluable part of my daily life. He not only helped keep things organised at home but also became someone I could rely on and enjoy spending time with. After a month-long holiday in Europe and Madagascar, it was time for the next chapter of my life to begin. In August 2023, I departed from Kraków and made a two-day stop in Lisbon before heading to Caracas to take up my new role as ECHO’s Head of Office for Venezuela. My time in Lisbon was a wonderful final pause before the big move, and I made sure to enjoy the city’s unique charm and vibrant atmosphere.

Strolling Through Central Lisbon

I spent my first day in Lisbon wandering through the heart of the city, revisiting some of my favourite spots. There’s something magical about Lisbon’s streets—the cobblestones, the trams climbing up the hills, and the beautiful mix of historical and modern architecture. As I strolled through the Baixa district, I loved the grand squares and tree-lined avenues, the buildings in pastel colours, and the lively atmosphere of locals and tourists alike.

The walk took me through Praça do Comércio, one of Lisbon’s most iconic squares by the river, where I could feel the historic significance of the place. From there, I walked to Rua Augusta, a lively pedestrian street full of shops, cafes, and restaurants, where I stopped for a coffee to soak in the vibrancy of the area.

As I ventured further, I made my way up to Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods. The narrow alleys, steep hills, and colourful buildings with their characteristic balconies created a truly charming atmosphere. I took my time walking around, enjoying the viewpoints that overlooked the city and river, and the peaceful ambiance of the little streets. I also made sure to visit one of my favourite spots—the Miradouro de Santa Luzia—where I could see the red rooftops and whitewashed buildings stretching all the way to the Tagus River.

Lisbon’s mellow vibe and the warmth of the sun made the walk even more enjoyable. It was a perfect way to spend my last few days in Europe before the big move to Venezuela. Every step in the city reminded me of the beauty of Lisbon—its blend of the old and the new, its rich history, and the unmistakable charm of its people.

On 11 August 2023, just a day before my flight to Lisbon and then Caracas, I had the pleasure of meeting up with two of my wonderful friends, Lucia and Aidan, and their lovely son. We decided to meet in Bardejov, a charming town in Slovakia, which was conveniently located halfway between Nowy Sącz and Kosice—where Lucia’s parents live.

A Beautiful Friendship Started in Juba

Our friendship goes way back to when we first met in Juba, South Sudan. It was there that we first connected, and we immediately bonded over shared experiences in humanitarian work. Over the years, our friendship has only grown, and it felt so special to reunite after a long time apart. Lucia, a Slovak, and Aidan, an Australian, now live in Melbourne, but they were on a family visit to Kosice, so meeting up in Bardejov was the perfect middle ground.

Catching Up in Bardejov – A Precious Reunion

In Bardejov, we had such a wonderful time together. We spent the day talking, catching up, and laughing, as we shared the latest updates from our lives. It was truly a joy to reconnect with old friends and reminisce about our time in South Sudan and the adventures we’ve had since. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable, and we all felt like no time had passed at all.

We had an amazing lunch together at a local restaurant, where we enjoyed some traditional Slovak dishes and wonderful conversation. Lucia and Aidan’s son was an absolute delight, and it was such a treat to meet the little one and see how much he had grown.

Although our reunion was short, it was incredibly precious and a reminder of the strong friendships formed through our shared humanitarian journeys. It was a moment of pure joy, and I left Bardejov feeling grateful for such meaningful friendships in my life.

In August 2023, while I was in Poland enjoying my holiday with my mum, I had to travel for two days to Warsaw to take care of some administrative matters. It was a quick trip, but it gave me a chance to explore the city once again and catch up with a dear friend.

The Journey to Warsaw – A Scenic Ride

I started my journey with a bus ride from Nowy Sącz to Kraków, where I then took a train to Warsaw. The journey itself was quite scenic, and it gave me a chance to reflect on my time in Poland while observing the beautiful Polish countryside. The train ride to Warsaw was smooth, and the excitement of visiting the capital city made the journey feel like part of the adventure.

Administrative Success and City Exploration

Once in Warsaw, I quickly took care of all the administrative issues that had brought me there. It was great to get everything sorted out without any hassle, which meant I could fully enjoy my time in the city. After finishing my tasks, I took the opportunity to explore Warsaw. I walked through some of my favourite parts of the city, such as the Royal Route and Łazienki Park, and soaked in the vibrant energy of the capital. I always find something new in Warsaw, whether it’s discovering a quiet corner in the park or enjoying a coffee in one of the city’s bustling cafes.

Catching Up with Fawad – A Heartwarming Reunion

One of the highlights of my trip was meeting with Fawad, my Afghan friend who now lives and works in Warsaw. Fawad and I met during my time working in Afghanistan, and it was so good to catch up with him in person. We spent a few hours reminiscing about our time together in Afghanistan, sharing stories, and discussing our experiences. It was a reminder of the special friendships that form during our humanitarian work, and I felt incredibly grateful to be able to reconnect.

Back to Nowy Sącz

Two days later, I was back on a train from Warsaw to Kraków, then catching a bus back to Nowy Sącz to continue my holiday with mum. It was a short but fulfilling trip, and I was happy to return to the familiar comfort of home to finish my break before heading to Venezuela.

In August 2023, during my holiday in Europe, I fulfilled one of my deepest dreams—I had the incredible opportunity to visit Madagascar, and even better, I could share this experience with my mum. It was her first time in Africa, and I was overjoyed to introduce her to this beautiful continent, especially Madagascar, which I had always longed to visit.

The Journey to Nosy Be – A Smooth and Pleasant Start

We flew to Nosy Be, a stunning island off the northwest coast of Madagascar, with a direct flight from Warsaw on a charter flight. The flight was comfortable, and it was such a pleasant surprise to see so many Polish travellers with us. My mum especially appreciated the chance to speak Polish with fellow passengers. The excitement was building as we approached our destination, a place neither of us had ever seen before.

Upon landing, we were greeted by a friendly team who took us by minibus to Madirokely, a peaceful and picturesque area on the island where we would be staying. The hotel was stunning, nestled near an amazing beach, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant blue sea. The colours of the ocean and the landscape were simply breathtaking, and it was a moment of pure joy to share this with Mum.

Madirokely – Our Home in Madagascar

Our time in Madirokely was nothing short of magical. We were welcomed by the warmest of people, and the vibrancy of the local culture was immediately evident. Here, we met Musa, a young guide who became our friend and whose family we continue to support. Musa’s hospitality and kindness made our stay even more special. We spent time chatting with him about the culture, the history of Madagascar, and of course, the wonders of the island.

Exploring the Island – A Journey Through Nature and Culture

During our stay, we had the chance to explore some of the most incredible places in Madagascar:
• Andoany: We started by visiting Andoany, a town near Nosy Be, where we experienced local markets, tasted traditional Malagasy food, and learned about the local way of life. The blend of African and Asian influences was apparent in the food, architecture, and culture.
• Ambanoro: Mum and I had a blast traveling in a tuk-tuk through Ambanoro, a charming village where we interacted with the local community and witnessed their simple yet vibrant lifestyle. The tuk-tuk ride through the narrow roads, surrounded by lush greenery, was an unforgettable experience.
• Andonday: We visited Musa’s family house in Andonday and spent time learning about the traditional Malagasy lifestyle. The warmth of his family left a lasting impression on us, and we felt like part of their community.
• Ampangorinana: Known for its amazing wildlife, we had the chance to see lemurs in their natural habitat. The forest around Ampangorinana was full of life—everything from colourful birds to small reptiles and, of course, the playful and curious lemurs.
• Nosy Iranja: This place truly felt like paradise. We visited Nosy Iranja, which offered the most amazing beach we had ever seen. The pristine white sands, the clear turquoise waters, and the gentle waves made it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Madagascar.
• Djamandjary: After Nosy Iranja, we continued our exploration to Djamandjary, where we were introduced to the local culture and traditions. This was another chance to witness how community and nature are intertwined in Malagasy life.
• Dystrict Ambanja: Here, we had the chance to visit a local market that was bustling with life and colors. The market was full of fresh produce, spices, and handcrafted goods—giving us a true taste of Madagascar’s local economy.
• A Local Chocolate Farm: One of the highlights of our visit to Ambanja was the chance to tour a chocolate farm. Madagascar is known for producing some of the best cocoa beans in the world, and it was fascinating to learn about the chocolate-making process, from harvesting the beans to crafting the finished product. The experience included a delicious tasting session, and we even brought some local chocolate home with us.
• Baobab Forest: We also visited the famous Baobab Forest near District Ambanja, where the iconic Baobab trees towered above us, their massive trunks and outstretched branches creating a surreal landscape. The Baobab trees are often referred to as the “upside-down trees” due to their unique appearance, and the forest was a mystical and awe-inspiring place to explore.

A Magical Experience in Madagascar

Visiting Madagascar was a life-changing experience, and sharing it with my mum made it even more special. From the amazing wildlife to the warm-hearted people, and the unbelievable landscapes, the island exceeded all our expectations. The trip allowed us to connect not only with the culture but also with the natural beauty of a place that feels like a world apart from anywhere else.

As we said our goodbyes and headed back to Warsaw, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the adventure we had shared. It was a trip full of memories, experiences, and moments of connection that will stay with us forever.

The summer of 2023 was a special time for me, marking the end of my deployment in Panama and preparing for my upcoming mission in Venezuela. I spent nearly a month traveling through Europe and Africa, taking the opportunity to reconnect with family, friends, and explore new places.

Exploring Poland – A Return to My Roots

I began my trip in Poland, where I spent much of my time revisiting my hometown of Nowy Sącz with my mum. The trip was an opportunity to recharge before the next chapter.
• Hrusztyn (Slovakia): Together with Mum, we took a side trip to Hrusztyn, a quaint town in Slovakia, just across the border. We enjoyed the quiet charm of the area and the peaceful countryside views.
• Krynica Zdrój: Known for its amazing wooden architecture, Krynica Zdrój was a favorite stop. The town’s wooden houses and traditional spa culture made it a beautiful and relaxing place to visit. The stunning landscapes and fresh air provided the perfect escape.
• Łódź: The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly Łódź. Łódź, long considered an industrial city with a tarnished reputation, surprised me completely. Known for being the center of Poland’s once-booming textile industry, the city has gone through a remarkable transformation in recent years. Łódź is now a vibrant city of culture, with a thriving arts scene, stunning modern architecture, and a reinvention of its historical spaces.

Walking through Piotrkowska Street, one of the longest commercial streets in Europe, was a revelation. This pedestrian-friendly avenue is lined with neo-renaissance buildings, art galleries, and local boutiques. The street is dotted with street art, creating an exciting blend of history and modernity. What once was a working-class street with gritty industrial buildings has now been reimagined into a cultural hotspot.

Łódź has gone to great lengths to restore many of its historic factories and warehouses, transforming them into creative spaces for art exhibitions, museums, cinemas, and even luxury apartments. This transformation is most visible in places like the Manufaktura Complex, which used to house a huge textile factory and is now a stunning shopping mall and cultural hub, featuring everything from contemporary art galleries to boutiques and restaurants. The architecture of Łódź is truly something special, with grand 19th-century buildings, loft spaces, and modernist structures standing side-by-side.

The Post-Industrial Revolution vibe in the city gives Łódź a unique identity. It’s not a typical Polish city; it is raw, with a sophisticated edge, and feels like an exciting work in progress. The city’s revitalization has turned Łódź into a magnet for creative professionals—from filmmakers and artists to designers and startups.

One of the highlights of visiting Łódź was meeting Marysia, a neighbour from Nowy Sącz, who had moved to the city years ago. She’s made Łódź her home and introduced me to her life there. We enjoyed catching up and discussing how much the city has changed since she arrived. Her stories gave me a deep appreciation for Łódź’s transformation and how it continues to attract people seeking new beginnings and creative opportunities.

Visiting Warsaw – Always Wonderful

Next, we headed to Warsaw, where we spent some time exploring the city. Warsaw is always a joy to visit, with its blend of history and modernity. Despite the heat, the city’s energy and beauty were incredible. Walking through the Old Town, Łazienki Park, and enjoying the vibrant local cafes was a great way to experience the city’s dynamic atmosphere.

A Day Trip to Slovakia

In a highlight of the trip, Mum, Agnieszka (our neighbour), and her mum, along with Pani Kurzejowa (Mum’s friend), took a day trip to Slovakia. The places we visited were full of natural beauty and history:
• Poprad: This town was a lovely spot in the Tatra Mountains, known for its thermal spas and scenic views.
• Vysná Boca and Nízná Boca: Both places were nestled in the mountains, and we spent the day walking through picturesque villages, surrounded by beautiful nature.
• Banská Štiavnica: A UNESCO World Heritage site, Banská Štiavnica is a historic town that is a hidden gem. With its well-preserved architecture and charming streets, it was one of the most stunning stops on our trip.

Wysowa Zdrój – Relaxation in the Mountains

We also spent some time in Wysowa Zdrój, a small spa town in the Beskidy Mountains. Known for its mineral springs and health resorts, it was the perfect place to relax and recharge. We enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, taking in the fresh mountain air, and exploring the nature trails.

Saying Goodbye to Poland – Last Visits Before Venezuela

Finally, it was time to leave Poland and head to Lisbon for my flight to Venezuela. Before I left, I spent time in Krakow, where I met with Julian and his partner, colleagues from ECHO, who were visiting Krakow for their holiday. It was wonderful to see them before my departure to Venezuela. It felt like the perfect way to say goodbye to Poland before embarking on my new adventure.

2023 marked my final six months in Panama before heading to my new mission in Venezuela. Despite a busy schedule with various humanitarian missions, I had the chance to enjoy the beauty of Panama and explore its many attractions.

Exploring Panama City and Beyond

During my time in Panama, I continued to explore Panama City and the surrounding areas. The city had so much to offer, from its vibrant urban life to its rich history and stunning natural surroundings. I spent time visiting places like Chagres National Park, Cerro Azul, Colon, and San Lorenzo. Each of these areas offered something unique, whether it was the lush landscapes of the park or the historical significance of the Fuerte Sherman fort. I also had the chance to visit Anton Valley and Punta Chame, both known for their beautiful nature and outdoor activities.

Tahir’s Visit – A Wonderful Reunion and Shared Adventures

One of the highlights of my time in Panama was the second visit of my dear friend, Tahir. Tahir, who I met years ago in Bangkok, had moved to Canada, but our friendship remained strong. His visit to Panama was a much-awaited reunion, and I was thrilled to host him again in this vibrant country.

During our time together, we explored Panama City and ventured beyond to discover some of Panama’s natural wonders. We started by heading to Chagres National Park, a stunning area filled with lush jungles, river valleys, and waterfalls. The park is a treasure trove of wildlife and a place that offers a sense of serenity and adventure at the same time. We hiked through the park, soaking in the beauty of the Panamanian rainforest and enjoying the peace and quiet it offered.

Next, we ventured to Cerro Azul, a mountain located just outside Panama City. The drive up the mountain was filled with breathtaking views, and once we reached the top, we were treated to an amazing panorama of the surrounding valleys and forest-covered hills. We spent the day walking around, enjoying the fresh mountain air and marveling at the spectacular scenery.

Our travels also took us to Colon, a historically significant port city on the Caribbean coast. Here, we explored the old forts, including Fuerte San Lorenzo, a UNESCO World Heritage site that stands as a reminder of Panama’s colonial past. Walking through the old walls and imagining the history behind them was a fascinating experience. We also spent time in the town, absorbing its local culture, and enjoying the warmth of the people.

From there, we headed to Anton Valley, a charming town known for its cool climate, hiking trails, and stunning mountain views. The valley is nestled within the Azuero Mountains, and we enjoyed exploring the area, visiting local farms, and relaxing in the peaceful surroundings. Another gem we explored was Punta Chame, a coastal area famous for its beautiful beaches and water activities. The serene environment was perfect for unwinding, and we spent some time walking along the sandy shores, feeling the warm Caribbean breeze.

A Visit from Christine – A Belgian Friend in Panama

Shortly after Tahir’s visit, I was blessed with another surprise: Christine, my dear Belgian friend, visited me from Atlanta, where she works. Christine and I met years ago through our shared work in humanitarian efforts, and she quickly became one of my closest friends. Christine’s visit was special because it allowed us to catch up in person after months apart. She’s always a joy to be around—full of warmth, intelligence, and infectious energy. Together, we explored Panama and made wonderful memories in places like Fuerte Sherman and Anton Valley. It was incredible to spend time with such an inspiring person and experience Panama through her eyes.

Preparing for My Next Adventure in Venezuela

By July, it was time to say goodbye to Panama. My holiday was just about to start, and I was getting ready for my new mission in Venezuela, where I would be moving at the end of August. The last months in Panama were full of gratitude, as I reflected on the experiences and relationships I had built during my time in the country. It was a bittersweet goodbye, but I was excited for what the next chapter would bring. Panama had been an incredible home and starting point for my next adventure.

In May 2023, I traveled once again to Mexico, this time heading to Ciudad Juárez, a city on the northern border of the country, where I was tasked with supporting our partners in managing the ongoing migration crisis. The situation on the US-Mexico border had reached critical levels, with thousands of migrants—often referred to as caminantes—seeking to cross into the United States, many of them fleeing from violence, poverty, and persecution in their home countries.

Humanitarian Efforts in Ciudad Juárez

During my visit to Ciudad Juárez, I met with various humanitarian partners, including UNHCR, IOM, and NGOs such as IRC and HIAS. These organizations were on the front lines, providing critical support to migrants who had traveled great distances in search of a better life. I also had the chance to meet with local state and municipal authorities, who were grappling with the increased demand for services and shelter.

Visiting Shelters for Migrants

I visited several migrant shelters both in the city and in its outskirts, where caminantes (also referred to as hopefuls) were staying temporarily while they waited for the opportunity to cross the border into the United States. The shelters were basic, but they offered some respite to those who had been traveling for weeks, sometimes months, in dangerous conditions. I saw firsthand the challenges that migrants face in these shelters, from lack of resources to the emotional toll of uncertainty about the future.

The shelters were often overwhelmed, with hundreds of people in need of food, medical attention, and psychosocial support. The migrants I spoke to had heartbreaking stories—many of them had been traveling alone or with their families, fleeing situations of violence, gang activity, and economic hardship in Central America and Mexico.

Crossing the Border – A Journey of Hope and Uncertainty

One of the most striking moments of the trip was when I had the opportunity to visit the US-Mexico border and see the fence that separates the two countries. The Rio Grande river, which runs along the border, was both a physical and symbolic barrier. Many migrants attempt to cross this river to reach the United States, risking their lives in the process.

I also walked across the international bridge into El Paso, Texas. This was my first time crossing the border, and it was a surreal experience. On the other side of the border in the United States, I visited several migrant support projects run by Caritas and various other NGOs working to support migrants as they arrived in the US. The US side of the border had its own set of challenges, with organizations working to process migrants, provide legal support, and offer temporary shelter.

While in El Paso, I spoke with several caminantes who had successfully crossed the border. Many of them were hoping to seek asylum in the US, but they faced a complicated legal process and often lived in precarious conditions. It was deeply humbling to hear their stories—many of them had faced immense challenges during their journeys, and yet, they still held onto hope for a better future.

Exploring El Paso – A Different Side of the US

I also had two days off in the US, which gave me a chance to explore El Paso and the surrounding area. I took some time to visit Sunland Park (New Mexico), a town near the border, where I appreciated the stark contrast between the US and the Mexican side of the border. The landscapes of west Texas were arid but stunning, with wide desert views and mountain ranges in the distance. It was a part of the US that was unfamiliar to me, but I enjoyed discovering the area and getting a sense of its culture and community.

The Migration Crisis in 2023

The migration crisis at the US-Mexico border in 2023 was one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges in the region. The caminantes I spoke with were part of a larger pattern of migration driven by violence, economic hardship, and climate change. The migrants—many of whom were families and children—faced enormous obstacles, including overcrowded shelters, limited access to legal support, and uncertain futures.

While organizations like UNHCR, IOM, and Caritas were doing their best to provide emergency relief and support, the sheer scale of the migration crisis meant that there was still much work to be done to meet the basic needs of those on the move.

Returning to Panama

After my visit to Ciudad Juárez, I flew to Houston and then returned to Panama City, reflecting on the experience. It was a humbling trip, and it gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges facing migrants at the border. The stories I heard, the struggles I witnessed, and the hope I saw in the faces of the caminantes reminded me of the importance of providing humanitarian support in times of crisis.

At the end of April 2023, I traveled to Venezuela for the first time. By then, I already knew I would be moving to the country in the upcoming months. This trip was crucial for me to prepare for the transfer, get to know the local context, and meet my new team.

Exploring Caracas – First Impressions of the Capital

Upon arrival in Caracas, I spent a few days meeting with humanitarian actors, getting to know the local working environment, and connecting with my future colleagues. Caracas was a city of contrasts—while it faced significant challenges, the resilience of its people was evident. During my free time, I explored the city, taking in the views from Ávila National Park and wandering through the vibrant streets. It was a city with warmth despite its hardships, and I was struck by the optimism and strength of its people.

Humanitarian Projects Across Venezuela – First Part of the Trip

I then traveled to several regions to visit humanitarian projects supported by ECHO. The aim was to understand the local humanitarian context and see how we could provide support in the most effective way. I visited places like Maracaibo, Cují Gacho, Paraguaipoa, Cojoro, and Guarero—each of which had unique challenges.
• Cují Gacho: This area, located in the Zulia state, was facing significant healthcare access issues. Local clinics were overwhelmed, and the economic situation had strained public services. The community members were hardworking but needed critical support to access basic health services.
• Paraguaipoa: A remote village in Zulia, Paraguaipoa was grappling with limited infrastructure and difficulty accessing essential resources like clean water and medications. The area’s isolation made it a priority for humanitarian projects.
• Cojoro: Located in the western region, Cojoro faced similar challenges, with the added burden of economic hardship. Local farmers and residents struggled with food insecurity, and there were efforts to improve agriculture support and disaster preparedness in the region.
• Guarero: In Guarero, located in the northern states, many families were facing housing challenges, with many homes damaged or destroyed by past storms. Efforts to provide shelter and rebuild communities were underway, but much more support was needed.

In all these locations, the efforts of local organizations and humanitarian responders were incredibly inspiring. While the needs were immense, I saw a strong commitment to improving conditions and providing assistance where it was most needed.

The Journey to Delta Amacuro – Beginning the Second Part of the Trip

After spending time in Caracas and visiting some of the key areas, the second part of my journey began with a flight to Maturín, the gateway to the Delta Amacuro region. This area is one of the most remote and challenging regions in Venezuela, home to various indigenous communities and a region that faces unique obstacles in terms of access to aid and resources.

The Orinoco River and Delta Amacuro – Navigating the Heart of Venezuela’s Indigenous Communities

The boat journey along the Orinoco River to San Rafael, Capure, and Pedernales was one of the most memorable experiences of my trip. The Orinoco Delta is a vast network of mangroves, channels, and islands, with isolated communities living along its banks. The journey allowed me to see firsthand the difficulties these communities face in accessing basic services like healthcare, education, and clean water.
• San Rafael, Capure, and Pedernales are some of the small communities in Delta Amacuro that rely heavily on the river for transportation and livelihoods. The isolation of these areas meant that humanitarian aid could not always reach as quickly as it should, and residents often faced limited access to essential resources.
• Indigenous groups, such as the Warao, who live in this area, face particular challenges. Their communities are remote, and many rely on the river as their lifeline. Yet the lack of proper infrastructure, transportation, and healthcare services puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to surviving and thriving. Many communities in Delta Amacuro also face issues of food insecurity, with little access to nutritious food and agricultural support.

The boat journey through these communities was both exciting and eye-opening. I was struck by the beauty of the river and its surroundings, but I was also reminded of the immense challenges faced by the people living in such remote areas.

Tucupita and the Communities of Delta Amacuro

After spending the night in Tucupita, the capital of Delta Amacuro, I continued my journey through the region, visiting even more isolated communities. I was continually impressed by the resilience of the people I met, as well as the hard work of local responders, who were working tirelessly to deliver aid, food, and healthcare to these vulnerable populations.

Returning to Caracas – Reflection and Preparation

After my time in Delta Amacuro, I returned to Caracas to reflect on the trip and prepare for the next steps in my mission. The experience provided me with a much deeper understanding of the humanitarian challenges in Venezuela, particularly in the isolated indigenous communities. It was clear to me that there was much work to be done, but the passion and determination of the local people were a constant source of inspiration.

Two weeks later, I returned to Panama City, feeling grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing efforts in Venezuela. I was eager to start my new role and continue supporting the humanitarian work in the country.

In April 2023, while I was staying in Portugal, I took a side trip to the Baltic countries for five days. This trip was a dream come true, as I had always wanted to explore this part of Europe. I flew from Lisbon to Riga, the capital of Latvia, and rented a car to begin my adventure. Riga became my home for the next few days, and I was immediately captivated by the charm and history of the city.

Riga – A Breathtaking City

Riga, with its beautiful architecture, rich history, and vibrant atmosphere, was an incredible starting point for my Baltic journey. The city’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, full of cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, and stunning Art Nouveau architecture. I explored the town hall square, admired the Riga Cathedral, and took in the breathtaking views along the Daugava River. It was hard not to fall in love with the energy of the place.

The Hill of Crosses – A Symbol of Faith in Lithuania

From Riga, I made my way to Lithuania and visited the Hill of Crosses (known in Lithuanian as Kryžių Kalnas), located near Šiauliai. This place was fascinating and strange, yet captivating in its own way. The Hill of Crosses is a pilgrimage site where thousands of crosses, large and small, have been placed by visitors over the years, symbolizing faith, hope, and resilience. As I walked around the hill, I felt a sense of reverence for the strong traditions and spirituality of the Lithuanian people.

On the way to the Hill of Crosses, I had the chance to admire the Lithuanian countryside, with its quaint villages and picturesque landscapes. The drive was scenic, with rolling fields and small towns, each with its own unique charm.

Exploring Estonia – Coastal Villages and Nordic Influence

After visiting Lithuania, I continued my journey northwards to Estonia, where I also enjoyed the freedom of traveling by car. The route was filled with beautiful sights, and I made stops in Ainaži and Treimani, two small coastal towns. Both places were quiet and peaceful, offering glimpses of the Baltic Sea and a sense of serenity.

The highlight of my trip to Estonia was visiting Parnawa, a lovely town on the coast. I spent most of the day there, enjoying its charming streets, wooden architecture, and the overall feeling of tranquility. The town felt like it had strong Nordic influences, with its traditional wooden houses and clean, minimalist designs. It was clear to me that this area had a rich historical connection to the Nordic countries, making it feel like a blend of Scandinavian and Baltic cultures.

A Delightful Stop in Liepupe Parish

On the way back to Riga, I made a stop in Liepupe parish, a rural area in Latvia. There, I had an unforgettable dinner in a traditional wooden Latvian hut, enjoying authentic Latvian cuisine. The meal was simple but delicious, and the rustic atmosphere added to the charm of the experience.

A Memorable Journey through the Baltic States

I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Baltic countries—each country had its own distinct personality, but they also shared a common bond in their natural beauty, architectural styles, and warm, friendly people. The Baltic coast offered stunning landscapes, while the wooden architecture I encountered throughout my journey felt like a beautiful reflection of the region’s rich cultural heritage.

This trip only deepened my appreciation for the Baltic states, and I’m already looking forward to returning and exploring even more of this fascinating part of Europe.

In April 2023, I spent my Easter between Portugal and the Baltic countries, and I was thrilled to be back in my Portuguese home. It was a special time to reconnect with both the familiar and the new, as I spent much of my time in the lovely town of Óbidos, as well as exploring nearby places.

Staying in Obidos and Exploring the Region

I started my time in Óbidos, a charming, medieval town that I’ve come to call home. It was wonderful to be back, enjoying the peaceful streets, historic architecture, and the lovely atmosphere of the town. I took the opportunity to explore the neighbouring towns by rental car, making it easy to discover some hidden gems in the surrounding areas:
• Foz do Arelho – A beautiful coastal town near the Atlantic Ocean, known for its stunning beaches and calm atmosphere. It was a perfect place to relax and soak in the coastal beauty.
• Vau – A quiet town, great for escaping to nature and appreciating the serenity of the countryside.
• Oeiras – A lovely area known for its scenic views, it was nice to stroll through this residential and peaceful neighbourhood.

A Special Easter – The Procession in Óbidos

One of the most unforgettable highlights of my time in Óbidos was the Easter procession, a deeply meaningful and unusual tradition in this small town. Easter in Óbidos is marked by religious rituals that have been passed down through generations, creating a sense of unity and reverence among the local community.

The Easter procession itself is a solemn yet vibrant event. On Easter Sunday, the streets of Óbidos are filled with locals, visitors, and participants dressed in traditional attire. The procession moves through the narrow cobblestone streets of this medieval town, creating a stunning visual backdrop with the whitewashed walls, colorful flowers, and ancient chapels.

What stood out to me was the sense of history and tradition that infused the entire experience. As the procession proceeded, I could hear the chanting, the bells ringing, and the soft sounds of the community coming together in reverence. There was a palpable sense of devotion and reflection, as well as a connection to the generations before.

One of the most poignant moments was when the statue of Christ was carried through the streets, with the crowd following in a slow, reverent procession. The solemnity of the occasion was balanced by a sense of community celebration, as families gathered, candles in hand, to mark the sacred holiday.

For me, participating in this procession was a reminder of the deep-rooted traditions in Óbidos and how Easter in this small town is more than just a religious observance—it’s a celebration of community, faith, and heritage.

Visiting Figueira da Foz and Quiaios

I also ventured northwards to visit Figueira da Foz and Quiaios, where my friends live. Kasia’s boyfriend’s family resides in this area, and it was a lovely visit. I enjoyed the beauty of these coastal towns, as well as the warm hospitality of my friends and their families.
• Figueira da Foz is known for its long sandy beaches and vibrant coastal atmosphere. It was refreshing to walk along the promenade and enjoy the fresh sea air.
• Quiaios is a quieter village with a more tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and taking in the natural beauty of the region.

A Visit to Lisbon

While in Portugal, I couldn’t miss a trip to Lisbon. As always, Lisbon never fails to impress. The charming neighbourhoods, the historic buildings, and the stunning views over the Tagus River are always a treat. Whether wandering through the Alfama district, visiting Belém Tower, or enjoying a pasteis de nata at a café, Lisbon is a city that never grows old, and it’s always a pleasure to return.

A Memorable Easter Journey

Spending Easter in Portugal was a beautiful way to reconnect with home, explore the surrounding regions, and immerse myself in the local culture. The visit to Óbidos, particularly the Easter procession, and the time spent with friends in Figueira da Foz and Quiaios made this trip one I will always remember. It was a perfect balance of tradition, beauty, and community.

At the end of February and beginning of March 2023, I traveled to Asuncion, Paraguay, in response to the severe floods that affected both Paraguay and Brazil. The floods caused widespread devastation, displacing thousands of people and triggering a massive humanitarian crisis. My mission was to visit the hardest-hit areas, support local responders, and help manage the humanitarian efforts on the ground.

The 2023 Floods in Paraguay and Brazil

The 2023 floods were catastrophic, caused by heavy rainfall and rising waters in the Paraguay River and other waterways. The floods affected entire regions in both Paraguay and Brazil, forcing communities to evacuate and leaving many without access to essential services. Areas along the riverbanks were particularly vulnerable, with homes, farms, and infrastructure submerged.

In Paraguay, the floodwaters overwhelmed the Paraguay River, causing displacement in towns like Villa Hayes, Concepcion, and Puerto Casado. The flooding also reached Brazil, where Porto Murtinho faced similar devastation, underscoring the cross-border nature of the disaster. Humanitarian organisations worked tirelessly to provide food, shelter, and medical care to those in need, while local authorities focused on evacuating communities and coordinating relief efforts.

Areas Affected by the Floods – My Mission on the Ground

During my time in Paraguay, I visited several towns and villages heavily impacted by the floods:
• Villa Hayes: A town near Asuncion that saw widespread damage as floodwaters inundated homes and businesses. I visited shelters and saw the incredible work being done by local responders.
• Concepcion: A city to the north, where the floods created a serious crisis, displacing families and cutting off access to critical supplies. We worked closely with local officials to coordinate aid and relief efforts.
• Puerto Valle-Mi, San Lazaro, Puerto Casado: These smaller towns in northern Paraguay were hit hard by the floods. In these regions, relief teams worked to distribute essential items and provide medical care to those affected.
• Porto Murtinho (Brazil): We traveled by boat across the Paraguay River to visit the Brazilian side, where communities also faced widespread damage from the rising waters.
• Puerto Carmelo Peralta: A town on the border of Paraguay and Brazil, it was another area where we focused on delivering aid and ensuring people received emergency support.

Santa Rosa del Aguaray – The Mormon Community

On our way back to Asuncion, we passed through the town of Santa Rosa del Aguaray, and I was fascinated to learn about the Mormon community that resides in the region. This town, along with other parts of Paraguay, is home to a significant number of Mormon settlers. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) began its missionary work in Paraguay in the 1950s, and over the decades, the Mormon population in the country has grown, with many establishing communities in rural areas.

In Santa Rosa del Aguaray, the Mormon community has built schools, agricultural cooperatives, and churches, making significant contributions to the local economy and society. Their strong work ethic, emphasis on family values, and commitment to self-reliance have earned them respect within the broader Paraguayan society. The community in Santa Rosa del Aguaray has been actively involved in local development projects and humanitarian work, and it was inspiring to learn about their impact on the region.

Returning to Panama City

After a tiring mission and days spent working alongside local responders and humanitarian organisations, I returned to Panama City. The 2023 floods in Paraguay and Brazil left a deep impression on me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the relief efforts. The resilience and spirit of the people I met in Paraguay were truly inspiring, and the support from organisations and local communities demonstrated the power of collaboration in times of crisis.

At the end of February and beginning of March 2023, I spent a week in the outskirts of Medellín, in Guarne and El Socorro, participating in HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training). This training was both challenging and invaluable, offering me important tools and strategies for working safely in high-risk areas.

What is HEAT Training and Why is it Important?

HEAT training is a specialized course designed for humanitarian workers, NGO staff, aid workers, and anyone who might be working in high-risk environments such as conflict zones or areas affected by natural disasters, political instability, or extreme health risks. It covers a variety of crucial topics to ensure that individuals are well-prepared to face potential dangers and remain safe during their missions.

Key components of HEAT training include:
• Personal security: Learning how to identify and assess risks, avoid dangerous situations, and protect yourself and your team.
• Situational awareness: Understanding the environment and recognising potential threats, such as local conflicts or civil unrest, that could affect safety.
• First aid: Practical training on how to respond to medical emergencies in environments where professional medical assistance may not be readily available. This includes everything from handling wounds and fractures to managing more severe medical crises like heart attacks or allergic reactions.
• Stress management: Techniques for dealing with the mental and emotional challenges that come with working in stressful, unpredictable, and sometimes traumatic environments. This can include managing exposure to violence or life-threatening situations.
• Survival techniques: Training in how to survive in dangerous or unfamiliar terrain, including how to handle emergencies when the normal infrastructure isn’t available.

The importance of this training cannot be overstated. Humanitarian workers often find themselves in challenging and volatile environments where safety is a constant concern. This training helps reduce risks and equips workers with the skills and confidence they need to navigate difficult situations safely and effectively. It also emphasizes self-care and looking after one’s mental health, which is just as crucial as physical safety in these environments.

Exploring Medellín – A City with a Rich History

Despite the intensity of the training, I managed to take some free time to explore Medellín, and I was absolutely blown away by the city. Medellín, once known for its troubled past, is now a thriving metropolis, full of energy, innovation, and cultural vibrancy. The transformation the city has undergone in recent decades is nothing short of remarkable.
• I visited several parts of the city, including the Comuna 13, which has been revitalized through urban art and community engagement. It’s inspiring to see how far Medellín has come in terms of overcoming its challenges and creating a positive and inclusive future.
• I was also impressed by the city’s public transportation system, especially the Metrocable, which offers panoramic views of the city as it glides over the mountains surrounding Medellín.

Connecting with EU Colleagues

Another highlight of the trip was the opportunity to meet many EU colleagues, who normally work around various EU delegations in Latin America. It was great to spend time with such a diverse group of professionals, sharing experiences and learning from each other. We had the chance to relax together after the training and enjoy some local cuisine and hospitality.

A Memorable Week in Medellín

Overall, my time in Medellín was an enriching and rewarding experience. The HEAT training provided valuable skills and knowledge, while the opportunity to explore the city and connect with colleagues made the trip even more special. I left Medellín feeling inspired by both the personal growth from the training and the amazing energy of the city.

At the end of January 2023, I extended my layover and spent two days exploring Miami before continuing on to Panama City. It was a wonderful opportunity to experience the energy of the city, and I was grateful for the time spent there.

Miami Beach – A Coastal Paradise and Architectural Jewel

My time in Miami Beach was nothing short of stunning. The beaches were a picture-perfect backdrop, with golden sands, clear blue waters, and a refreshing breeze. Miami Beach’s beauty is certainly part of its allure, but what truly stood out to me was the iconic art deco architecture that defines the area.
• Ocean Drive is the heart of Miami Beach’s art deco district, a stretch of road lined with pastel-coloured buildings that evoke the glamour and style of the 1920s and 1930s. These buildings, with their neon lights, curved corners, and bold geometric shapes, gave the area a vintage charm, yet still felt fresh and vibrant.
• The façades of the hotels and restaurants on Ocean Drive are works of art, with streamlined forms, palm tree motifs, and open terraces that draw the eye. Even though the architecture is more than 80 years old, it feels timeless, combining modern luxury with the classic beauty of the past.
• Beyond the beaches and architecture, the energy of the area is palpable, with cafes, bars, and shops blending seamlessly into the streetscape. I loved walking along the Art Deco Historic District, soaking in the unique blend of the coastal lifestyle with the artistic charm of the district. The warm sunshine added to the overall appeal, making it a perfect spot to relax and take in the sights.

Little Havana – A Taste of Cuba in Miami

While Miami Beach was all about its coastal charm and architectural beauty, Little Havana offered a completely different but equally captivating experience. Known for its Cuban roots, this vibrant neighborhood was brimming with culture, music, and flavour.
• Walking down Calle Ocho (8th Street), the main street of Little Havana, I was immersed in the sounds of Salsa music and the sights of Cuban cafes, street art, and Cuban flags hanging proudly in windows. There’s an undeniable rhythm to the area, where the lively pace of the Cuban community fills every corner.
• The Cuban influence is evident everywhere, from the cafes serving strong Cuban coffee to the restaurants offering traditional Cuban dishes like ropa vieja (shredded beef) and tostones (fried plantains). I had the chance to stop at one of the cafes, where the coffee was incredibly strong and rich, just as it should be in Cuba.
• Another highlight of Little Havana is its street art. Murals and painted walls depict Cuban history, revolutionary icons, and tropical themes, adding a splash of colour and creativity to the already vibrant streets. The neighbourhood also has Cuban markets selling everything from handmade cigars to salsa music records.
• Domino Park is another iconic spot in Little Havana, where you’ll see locals gathered, playing dominoes and sharing stories. It’s a place where the community comes together, and the energy of the area is felt deeply.

A Memorable Visit to Miami

The time I spent in Miami, especially in Miami Beach and Little Havana, was a delightful mix of relaxation, cultural immersion, and beautiful scenery. From the art deco wonders of Miami Beach to the lively, cultural richness of Little Havana, I found the city to be an inspiring blend of history, modernity, and diverse culture.

But the trip was made even more special by meeting Carlos, my wonderful Mexican friend from Thailand, and catching up over drinks in Miami. It was the perfect ending to my brief but unforgettable stopover in this vibrant city.
