Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, July 2022

In July 2022, I traveled solo to the Dominican Republic, spending time in Santo Domingo and also visiting Bonao, Constanza, and Boca Chica. The trip allowed me to explore both the vibrant capital city and the surrounding natural beauty.

Santo Domingo – A City Full of History

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is a city that blends
history and modernity. I spent a lot of time in the Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its cobblestone streets and historic buildings.
Alcázar de Colón and the First Cathedral of the Americas were some of the iconic landmarks I visited, each with its own story to tell about the early days of European colonization in the Americas.
Malecon, the seaside boulevard, offered beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea and a chance to relax and enjoy the ocean breeze.
Plaza de la Cultura is home to museums and cultural centers, where I was able to learn more about the country’s heritage.

Exploring the Surroundings – Nature and Adventure

I also ventured outside of Santo Domingo to see more of the island’s natural beauty.
Bonao, a town in the central mountains, was a highlight with its lush landscapes and the famous Damajagua Waterfalls. I had the opportunity to hike to the waterfalls, enjoying the cool, crystal-clear pools along the way.
Constanza, known for its cool mountain air and stunning views, was another memorable stop. I took in the scenic Jarabacoa River and marveled at the Pico Duarte mountains, the highest peak in the Caribbean.
Boca Chica, a beach destination close to the capital, offered a relaxing escape with its shallow waters and gentle waves, making it a great place to unwind.

A Journey of Discovery

This trip to the
Dominican Republic gave me the chance to experience both the rich cultural heritage of Santo Domingo and the natural wonders beyond the city. Whether I was exploring colonial streets or hiking in the mountains, it was a journey filled with a balance of urban life and nature.
