Panama in 2021 🇵🇦
My first picture of 2021, Panama City, Panama, January 2021
The year 2021 felt like a time of recovery and reconnection—both professionally and personally. As the world slowly emerged from the shadow of COVID-19, I found myself travelling across the continent for work, while also deepening my connection to Panama, a country that had become home.
It was a year of meeting new people, strengthening old friendships, and welcoming visits from colleagues and friends. I took the time to explore both familiar and new places, from the streets of Panama City to the natural beauty of Portobelo District, Lago Bayano, and San Juan.
Panama City – Rediscovering the Capital
Despite having lived in Panama City for some time, 2021 was a chance to see it through fresh eyes. The city had started to regain its pre-pandemic vibrancy, with restaurants, cultural spaces, and social life slowly returning. Walking through Casco Viejo, the modern skyline in the distance contrasted sharply with the colonial charm of the historic quarter, reminding me why Panama City is such a unique and fascinating place.
Portobelo District – History and Nature in One Place
A visit to Portobelo District was another highlight of the year. This coastal region, steeped in history, was once a key Spanish trade hub and a frequent target of pirates. The ruins of colonial fortresses, combined with stunning Caribbean waters, made it an incredible mix of history and nature. Walking through the old Spanish forts, I imagined the centuries of trade, battles, and cultural exchanges that had taken place here.
Lago Bayano – A Hidden Gem
Lago Bayano was a completely different experience—one of untouched nature and adventure. Exploring its caves and kayaking through its waters felt like stepping into another world, where limestone formations, lush vegetation, and hidden waterways created a surreal landscape.
San Juan – An Escape to the Countryside
The year also brought me to San Juan, a place where tranquillity and rural beauty reigned. Away from the energy of the city, I enjoyed the slower pace of life, taking in the natural landscapes and spending time with locals who welcomed me with warmth.
A Year of Growth and Connection
Looking back, 2021 was more than just a year of travel—it was about appreciating where I was, who I was with, and the experiences that made life meaningful. Whether through work, friendships, or exploring new corners of Panama, it was a year of embracing both the familiar and the unknown.
