July 2019: A Very Special Summer Adventure

One of the best summer holidays of my life was about to begin. It was July 2019, and I had just arrived in Warsaw from Singapore, having left my posting in Asia behind. After a quick rest, I found myself back at Okęcie Airport, waiting for Tahir to arrive from Toronto!

Organising his trip to Europe and Poland was no small feat, but we made it happen. Tahir travelled with a Canadian Refugee Travel Document, issued to individuals who are officially recognised as refugees in Canada. This document, in lieu of a national passport, allows refugees to travel internationally. After obtaining this, we approached the Consulate of Poland in Toronto to apply for a tourist visa to visit the Schengen Area. To our immense joy, Tahir was granted the visa, making this journey a reality.

A Day in Warsaw

Before Tahir’s arrival, I had a day to explore Warsaw—a city I always enjoy returning to. I spent time wandering the streets, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the city centre. Later, I met up with Kasia, my dear friend and co-owner of our house in Portugal. Kasia already knew Tahir from her visit to Bangkok, so she was just as excited about his arrival as I was.

Finally, the moment came. Late in the evening, I stood at Okęcie Airport, eagerly waiting for Tahir’s flight from Toronto to land. When he stepped through the arrivals gate, it was an emotional reunion. Together with Kasia, we embraced him warmly and welcomed him to Poland for the very first time.

From the airport, Tahir and I boarded a flight to Kraków. Despite the long journey, his excitement was palpable, and we took the time for a quick tour of Kraków’s Old Town before continuing our journey. My brother picked us up in Kraków and drove us to Nowy Sącz, where Mum and the rest of the family were eagerly waiting to meet him.

The Beginning of an Adventure

This marked the beginning of an unforgettable summer adventure in Poland and Europe. Having Tahir meet my family and friends, experience the places that shaped me, and strengthen the bond we share was truly special. It was a summer filled with love, laughter, and memories that will always stay close to my heart.
