Lubawa, Poland, September 2021

After my wonderful time in Portugal, I continued my second part of the holiday in Poland in September 2021. This trip was a mix of family time, beautiful landscapes, and a deeply meaningful reunion with former colleagues who had been forced to flee Afghanistan.

A Road Trip to Mazury – Poland’s Land of a Thousand Lakes

After arriving in
Nowy SÄ…cz and spending time with Mum and family, we set off on a long car trip to Mazury, Poland’s breathtaking lake district, known for its unspoiled nature, dense forests, and countless waterways.

We chose to stay in a
spa hotel near Ostróda, deep in the forest, offering complete peace and relaxation. From there, we explored:
Ostróda – A charming lakeside town often referred to as the gateway to Mazury. It is known for its beautiful waterfront promenade, the Ostróda-ElblÄ…g Canal (one of the most unique waterways in the world), and its relaxed atmosphere. The town’s small marina, old castle ruins, and lakeside cafés made it the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.
Lubawa and other villages – Small, picturesque places where life moves at a slower pace, allowing us to experience Mazury’s countryside charm.

One of the highlights was a
cruise on the lakes of Ostróda, gliding through the calm waters while surrounded by endless greenery and reflections of the sky on the water’s surface. The sense of tranquillity here was incredible—Mazury is truly one of the most peaceful places in Poland.

Mazury is not just about
scenic landscapes; it is also a place of hidden history and deep cultural traditions. The region has a mix of Polish, Prussian, and even Scandinavian influences, visible in its architecture and folk customs. It’s no surprise that many Polish people escape to Mazury for rest and solitude, away from the noise of city life.

A Visit to WohyÅ„ – A Reunion with Afghan Colleagues

After our
relaxing time in Mazury, we returned to Nowy Sącz, but soon I had to head to eastern Poland, to a refugee centre in Wohyń.

This visit was
particularly emotional and meaningful—I was going to meet my Afghan ECHO colleagues, who had recently been evacuated from Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover. Poland had granted them international protection, and they had just arrived to start their new lives in Europe.

Reuniting with them was
a powerful moment. After everything they had endured, seeing them safe but also uncertain about their future was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. We spent time talking, catching up, and offering support as they adjusted to this new reality.

While there, we visited:
RadzyÅ„ Podlaski – A nearby town, where we walked through its historic streets, processing everything that had happened in the last few months.

Rediscovering Lublin – A City of History and Culture

Before returning to
Nowy SÄ…cz, I made a stop in Lublin, a city I had last visited as a small child and barely remembered.

Walking through
Lublin’s Old Town, I was surprised by its rich history, beautiful Renaissance buildings, and lively cultural atmosphere. The city’s blend of Polish, Jewish, and Eastern European influences made it fascinating to explore.

Southern Poland – Wooden Architecture and Breathtaking Nature

Back in
southern Poland, I continued my holiday with Mum, visiting:
KroÅ›cienko & Szczawnica – These beautiful towns in the Pieniny Mountains are known for their traditional wooden architecture, spa culture, and stunning landscapes. The wooden churches, mountain views, and winding rivers made this part of the trip especially magical.

Time
flew by too quickly, and before I knew it, I was at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, transferring on my way back to Panama City.

Reflections on a Special Trip

This holiday in
Poland was about family, nature, and meaningful connections. From the tranquil lakes of Mazury to the mountains of the south, and from joyful reunions to deeply emotional moments, it was a journey that reminded me of the beauty of home and the resilience of those forced to start anew.
